Jack Spurlock, Prodigal
''Jack Spurlock, Prodigal'' is a 1918 American silent comedy film directed by Carl Harbaugh and starring George Walsh, Dan Mason, and Ruth Taylor. It is based on the best-selling 1908 novel of the same name by George Horace Lorimer which is first published as a serial in the Saturday Evening Post. The film was released by Fox Film Corporation on February 10, 1918, as a Special Features release. Another film adaptation under by the name ''A Self-Made Man'' was later released in 1922, which stars William Russell as Jack Spurlock. Plot As described in a film magazine, Jack Spurlock (Walsh) is expelled from Harvard because of his many wild exploits around Boston. He capped the climax of these wild times when he returned to the dormitories one night after a hot time at the cabarets in Boston with a bear. The ''Moving Picture World'' was an influential early trade journal for the American film industry, from 1907 to 1927. An industry powerhouse at its height, ''Moving Picture World'' frequently reiterated its independence from the film studios. In 1911, the magazine bought out ''Views and Film Index''. Its reviews illustrate the standards and tastes of film in its infancy, and shed light on story content in those early days. By 1914, it had a reported circulation of approximately 15,000. The publication was founded by James Petrie (J.P.) Chalmers, Jr. (1866–1912), who began publishing in March 1907 as ''The Moving Picture World and View Photographer''. William Fox (producer)
Wilhelm Fried Fuchs (; January 1, 1879 – May 8, 1952), commonly known as William Fox, was a Hungarian Americans, Hungarian-American film industry executive who founded the Fox Film, Fox Film Corporation in 1915 and the Fox Theatres, Fox West Coast Theatres chain in the 1920s. Although he lost control of his film businesses in 1930, his name was used by 20th Century Fox (now part of the Walt Disney Company) and continues to be used in the trademarks of the present-day Fox Corporation, including the Fox Broadcasting Company, Fox News, Fox Sports and Foxtel.
