Jack Garland (Australian Politician)
John Davis "Jack" Garland (8 April 1922 – 3 September 1993) was an Australian trade unionist and politician. He was a Labor member of the New South Wales Legislative Council from 1981 to 1990. Biography Garland was born in Sydney, and after leaving school became a toolmaker. He was active in the trade union movement, serving as a shop steward and later a district official in the Amalgamated Engineering Union (AEU). Garland was elected National Secretary of the union in 1957 and continued in the role following its amalgamation into the Amalgamated Metal Workers Union in 1972. Garland held the post until 1981, when he was elected to the New South Wales Legislative Council for the Labor Party (ALP). He held ALP membership for over forty years, and was a delegate to State and Federal Electoral Councils, as well as a delegate to the party's national conference for 12 years. Jack Garland (1 February 1908 – 29 November 1985) was a boxer born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Boxing career Amateur career Garland won the 1928 Amateur Boxing Association British bantamweight title, when boxing out of the Gordon Highlanders BC. He then represented Great Britain in the bantamweight class at the 1928 Summer Olympics. John Richard Garland (January 1, 1918 – March 14, 1964) was a Canadian politician, who was a longtime member of the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Nipissing. He was a member of the Liberal Party of Canada. Garland was first elected in 1949, when incumbent member Léo Gauthier moved to represent the new Sudbury riding. He was reelected in every subsequent election until his death in 1964. Garland was appointed Minister of National Revenue in the government of Lester Pearson in 1963, and held that cabinet position when he died. He was given a state funeral. As a member of the Queen's Privy Council for Canada he was entitled to use the honorific The Honourable. Jack Bee Garland (9 December 1869 – 19 September 1936) also known as Elvira Virginia Mugarrieta, Babe Bean, Jack Beam, Jack Maines, and Beebe Beam, was an author, nurse and adventurer. Garland was assigned female at birth but lived as a man in San Francisco's Tenderloin District, and had erotic relationships with young men he met there, making him a notable early example of both a trans man, as well as a trans man attracted to other men. North Bay Airport or North Bay/Jack Garland Airport in North Bay, Ontario, Canada is located at Hornell Heights, north-northeast of the city. It is located adjacent to Canadian Forces Base North Bay, operational since 1951 (as RCAF Station North Bay until 1966), the operational control centre for Canadian operations of the North American Aerospace Defense Command. The airport is named in memory of Jack Garland, a longtime Member of Parliament for North Bay's Nipissing electoral district. Until 2004 it hosted an annual air show during North Bay's Heritage Festival, with a large military component. The airport is classified as an airport of entry by Nav Canada and is staffed by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).
