JREAP
The Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol (JREAP) enables tactical data messages to be transmitted over long-distance networks, e.g. satellite links, thereby extending the range of Tactical Data Links (TDLs). JREAP is documented in U.S. Military Standard (MIL-STD) 3011 and NATO Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 5518, "Interoperability Standard for the Joint Range Extension Applications Protocol (JREAP)." Purpose JREAP was developed due to the need to communicate data over long distances without degradation to the message format or content. JREAP takes the message from the format it was originally formatted in and changes the protocol so that the message can be transmitted over Beyond Line-of Sight media. Synchronous serial communication describes a serial communication protocol , "In synchronous transmission, groups of bits are combined into frames,and frames are sent continuously with or without data to be transmitted." It allows several users to share the same frequency channel by dividing the signal into different time slots. Demand Assigned Multiple Access (DAMA) is a technology used to assign a channel to clients that do not need to use it constantly. DAMA systems assign communication channels based on news issued from user terminals to a network security system. When the circuit is no longer in use, the channels are again returned to the central pool for reassignment to other users. Channels are typically a pair of carrier frequencies (one for transmit and one for receive), but can be other fixed bandwidth resources such as timeslots in a TDMA burst plan or even physical party line channels. Once a channel is allocated to a given pair of nodes, it is not available to other users in the network until their session is finished.
