Itiban Comic Shop
Itiban Comic Shop is a Brazilian comic book store founded in 1989 by the couple Mitie Taketani and Francisco Utrabo (better known as Xico Utrabo) in Curitiba. It was the first bookstore specializing in comics in the Brazilian South Region and one of the pioneers in Brazil. The name references the Japanese word "ichiban" (一番), meaning "number 1". History In its early years, Itiban also sold newspapers and magazines due to the rules of the distributors. Over time, they managed to increase the amount of material related to comics, music and cinema. They also started to sell comics from the United States and the United Kingdom after an agreement with Devir Livraria, which acted as comic book's importer. Laerte Coutinho
Laerte Coutinho (born 10 June 1951), known mainly as simply Laerte, is a Brazilian cartoonist and screenwriter, known for creating comic strips such as ''Piratas do Tietê'' (''Pirates of the Tietê River''). She was part of the Brazilian underground comics scene of the 1980s. Together with Angeli and Glauco (and later Adão Iturrusgarai) she drew the collaborative comic strip '. She has done work for publications such as ''Balão'', ''O Pasquim'', and ''Chiclete com Banana'' magazines, and draws regularly for ''Folha de S. Paulo'' newspaper. Since the mid 2000s, her strips have become more "philosophical" and less humor-focused, relying less on recurring characters. She is a transgender woman. Prêmio Angelo Agostini
Prêmio Angelo Agostini (Angelo Agostini Award), sometimes also called Troféu Angelo Agostini (Angelo Agostini Trophy), is the most traditional comics award in Brazil. It was created in 1985 by the Associação dos Quadrinhistas e Caricaturistas do Estado de São Paulo (AQC-ESP), which still organizes the event today. The award's name pays homage to Angelo Agostini, considered at the time the pioneer artist of Brazilian comics. The event also seeks to take place, whenever possible, on Dia do Quadrinho Nacional ("National Comics Day", in January 30), the same date in which, in 1869, the first episode of the Agostini's sequential art series ''As Aventuras de Nhô Quim ou Impressões de Uma Viagem à Corte'' was published. Troféu HQ Mix is a Brazilian comics award. The prize was created in 1989 by João Gualberto Costa (Gual) and José Alberto Lovetro (Jal), members of the Association of the Brazilian Cartoonists. The name refers to the television show about comics that Gual and Jal had in the 1980s: "HQ" is abbreviation of "História em Quadrinhos" ("Comics" in Brazilian Portuguese Brazilian Portuguese (; ; also known as pt-BR) is the set of Variety (linguistics), varieties of Portuguese language native to Brazil. Universo HQ ("Comics Universe") is a Brazilian website about comics and considered the most important Brazilian information source on comics-related news. History Universo HQ was created by Samir Naliato and first aired on January 5, 2000. After six months, he invited the journalist Sidney Gusman to become the website's editor. Gusman also invited Sérgio Codespoti and Marcelo Naranjo to work with them, followed by many different collaborators during the years. The first journalistic highlight to Universo HQ was in 2000, when artist Jerry Robinson had an infarction during a visit to São Paulo. Bienal de Quadrinhos de Curitiba is a Brazilian comic book festival held since 2011 in Curitiba. History In 2011, the event Gibicon nº 0 ("Gibi" is an informal way of calling comic books in Brazil) took place, with the subtitle "Curitiba's International Comics Convention", organized by Quadrinhofilia Produções Artísticas with Znort Ilustradores. They were invited by Curitiba's Cultural Foundation. Marcello Eduardo Mouco Quintanilha Quintanilha (born 1971) is a Brazilian comic book artist. Born in Niterói, he first published comics in 1988, for magazines such as ''Mestre Kim'', ''General'', ''Metal Pesado'' and ''Zé Pereira'', under the pseudonym Marcelo Gaú. In 1999 he published his first graphic novel, ''Fealdade de Fabiano Gorila''. That year, during the first edition of the International Comics Festival of Belo Horizonte, he met François Boucq, who became interested in his work and convinced him to send his drawings to European publishers.
