Itapagipe Peninsula
The Itapagipe Peninsula () is a peninsula located in the city of Salvador, Bahia, Salvador, capital of the Brazilian state of Bahia. The peninsula comprises Administrative Region III, including the neighborhoods of Alagados, Boa Viagem beach, Bonfim, Monte Serrat, Ribeira, Uruguai, Mares, Roma, Caminho de Areia, Vila Ruy Barbosa, and Massaranduba, among others. Rua Fernandes Viêira and Avenida Afrânio Peixoto roughly form a boundary between the peninsula and the city of Salvador. The Church of Our Lady of Penha (), one of the earliest structures, occupies the northern tip of the peninsula. Etymology The name "Itapagipe" comes from the Tupi language and means "place of the stone in the river" (''ita'', stone + ''paba'', place + y'', river + ''pe'', in). The Church of Our Lord of Bonfim () is the most famous of the Catholic churches of Salvador, in the State of Bahia, Brazil. Eduardo de Almeida Navarro (born 20 February 1962) is a Brazilian philologist and lexicographer, specialist in Old Tupi and Nheengatu. He is a full professor at the University of São Paulo, where he has been teaching Old Tupi since 1993, and Nheengatu since 2009. It was built as largest private residence in the 19th century in Bahia, and was renovated into a social services home in 1887.
