It was founded by Choi Ki-woong, who continued to operate the business until 2011. He had been trading books since the 1960s, although then without a storefront. He gathered texts he could find that were in English, including American department store catalogues, novels, and magazines and sold them to bookstores in Seoul. Seoul Future Heritage () is a designation by the Seoul Metropolitan Government for entities in Seoul that are deemed worthy of preservation. Various things can be so designated, including buildings, restaurants, books, and foods. The designation has existed since 2012, and is maintained by the Seoul Metropolitan Government. Itaewon
Itaewon (; ) is a commercial district in Seoul, South Korea, known for its nightlife and multi-ethnic population. Etymology The name Itaewon was originally derived from the name of an inn located there during the Joseon period. Today it's called Itaewon alluding to its abundance of pear trees (梨泰院). According to a folktale, the name was also written using different Hanja characters that alluded to foreign babies (異胎院). When the Japanese invaded Seoul (1592–1593) during the Imjin War, a group of Japanese soldiers seized a Buddhist temple in what is now Itaewon where Buddhist nuns lived. The soldiers stayed at the temple for a while and raped the Buddhist nuns. When the soldiers left they burned down the Buddhist temple. The raped Buddhist nuns now homeless settled nearby and eventually gave birth to children. Dongyang Bookstore
Dongyang Bookstore () is a historic bookstore in Jongno District, Seoul, South Korea. It is one of the oldest active bookstores in Seoul, having been founded in 1953. It is a designated Seoul Future Heritage. It was initially located in Hyehwa-dong, before moving to its current location in 1954. Its founder was Lee Sun-gyeong (), the wife of painter Chang Ucchin and daughter of Yi Pyong-do. She reportedly served as the breadwinner between her and her husband, through the business. In 1987, she handed off the business to her long-time employee Choi Ju-bo (). In 2004, Choi handed the business off to her daughter, So-yeong (). By 2019, the younger Choi was still the CEO. After the business was designated a Seoul Future Heritage in the 2010s, the Seoul Metropolitan Government provided funds for its renovation.
