Isabel Naftel
Isabel Naftel, née Oakley, (baptised 20 July 1832, died 1912) was a British artist known for her portrait, genre and landscape paintings. Biography Isabel Oakley was the youngest of the three daughters of the, then, Derby based artist Octavius Oakley and his wife Maria Moseley. Her genre and portrait paintings, and landscapes of the English south coast and the Channel Islands were shown on a regular basis in London during the Victorian era. Between 1857 and 1891, she had 54 works accepted for public exhibition. Ten of Neftel's paintings were included in exhibitions at the Royal Academy and she had 13 works accepted by the Society of British Artists and nine pieces by the New Watercolour Society. Among her works shown at the Royal Academy were ''A Little Red Riding Hood'' in 1862, ''Musing'' in 1869 and ''A Sark Cottage'' in 1885. Paul Jacob Naftel
Paul Jacob Naftel (10 September 1817 – 13 September 1891) was a watercolour painter from Guernsey, the only Guernsey-born professional painter of the 19th century. Biography Naftel was born on 10 September 1817 in Guernsey. He was a self-taught artist and taught drawing at Elizabeth College on Guernsey. Naftel was extremely prolific, producing over 1000 works during his lifetime. He came to particular prominence when he recorded Queen Victoria's visit to Guernsey in 1846, with the resulting prints published in ''The Illustrated London News''. In 1856 he was elected to the Society of Painters in Water Colours. He married twice. His second wife, Isabel Oakley, was an artist and the youngest daughter of his longtime friend Octavius Oakley. Grosvenor Gallery
The Grosvenor Gallery was an art gallery in London founded in 1877 by Sir Coutts Lindsay and his wife Blanche. Its first directors were J. Comyns Carr and Charles Hallé. The gallery proved crucial to the Aesthetic Movement because it provided a home for those artists whose approaches the more classical and conservative Royal Academy did not welcome, such as Edward Burne-Jones and Walter Crane. History The gallery was founded in Bond Street, London, in 1877 by Sir Coutts Lindsay and his wife Blanche. They engaged J. Comyns Carr and Charles Hallé as co-directors. Lindsay and his wife were well-born and well-connected, and both were amateur artists. Blanche was born a Rothschild, and it was her money which made the whole enterprise possible. The Royal Watercolour Society is a British institution of painters working in watercolours. The Society is a centre of excellence for water-based media on paper, which allows for a diverse and interesting range of approaches to the medium of watercolour. Its members, or associates, use the post-nominal initials RWS and ARWS (associate member). They are elected by the membership, with typically half a dozen new associates joining the Society each year. History The society was founded as the ''Society of Painters in Water Colours'' in 1804 by William Frederick Wells. Its original membership was William Sawrey Gilpin, Robert Hills, John Claude Nattes, John Varley, Cornelius Varley, Francis Nicholson, Samuel Shelley, William Henry Pyne and Nicholas Pocock. Maud Naftel
Maud Naftel (1856–1890) was a British watercolourist. Life Naftel was born in 1856, the daughter of Isabel Oakley and Paul Jacob Naftel who were both watercolour painters. She has been reported as an only child but it is thought that another artist named Isabel Naftel was her sister. Maud was trained in painting by her father, at the Slade School of Fine Art and by Carolus-Duran in Paris. Naftel exhibited at the Dudley Art Gallery and with their Society. She was considered to the "only true" flower painter as her parents, her sister and her two painting aunts had different or wider painting interests. Her illustrated book "Flowers and How to Paint Them" was published in 1886 and it became a standard work. Naftel died in London in 1890 at her father's home in Chelsea. She was one of the first people to be cremated at Woking Crematorium.
