Makkal Pavalar Inkulab (also spelt Inquilab, Inkulab or Ingulab) (c. 1944 – 1 December 2016) was an Indian rationalist Tamil poet/writer, activist, and Communist with Marxist Leninist inclination. He retired as a professor of Tamil at The New College, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His birth name is Shahul Hameed and a known follower of Periyar. Career His poems espousing rationality have been critically acclaimed. ''Kanmani Rajam'', his most famous poem, criticizes the moral bankruptcy of politicians. His song/poem ''Naanga Manushangada (We are human beings)'' is a famous Dalit-freedom song that is still played in many Dalit gatherings. ''Avvai'', his drama is considered to be the first modern Tamil drama, and a prescribed textbook for many colleges. The New College, Chennai
The New College is an institution of higher education in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Established in 1951, the institution is one of the affiliated colleges of the University of Madras, with autonomous status. The college was established by the Muslim Educational Association of Southern India (MEASI) to meet the educational requirements of the Muslim students in Southern India. The majority of students in the college are from Muslim community. Location The college is located in the Center of Chennai on a campus on Peter's road, Royapettah. It is one of the few colleges in Chennai located within the city hub. The older buildings are notable for their Indo-Saracenic architecture which stand in contrast to the new educational blocks. Kannagi
Kannagi (), sometimes spelled Kannaki, is a legendary Tamil woman who forms the central character of the Tamil epic '' Cilappatikāram''. Kannagi is described as a chaste woman who stays with her husband despite his adultery, their attempt to rebuild their marriage after her unrepentant husband had lost everything, how he is framed then punished without the due checks and processes of justice. Kannagi proves and protests the injustice, then curses the king and city of Madurai, leading to the death of the unjust Pandyan king of Madurai, who had wrongfully put her husband Kovalan to death. It is a story about premarital love. Authored by Kapilar, it is the eighth poem in the '' Pattuppāṭṭu'' anthology. The poem is generally dated to the classical period (2nd- to 3rd-century CE). The ''Kurincippattu'' poem has 261 lines in ''akaval'' meter. It has 1,440 words, of which at least 19 are Sanskrit loan words. The underlying story is about a hill-tribe chieftain who sees a girl and falls in love at first sight. She falls for him too. ''Maṇimēkalai'' (, ), also spelled ''Manimekhalai'' or ''Manimekalai'', is a Tamil Buddhist epic composed by Kulavāṇikaṉ Seethalai Sataṉar probably somewhere between the 2nd century to the 6th century. It is an "anti-love story", a sequel to the "love story" in the earliest Tamil epic '' Cilappatikaram'', with some characters from it and their next generation. The epic consists of 4,861 lines in ''akaval'' meter, arranged in 30 cantos. The title ''Manimekalai'' is also the name of the daughter of Kovalan and Madhavi, who follows in her mother's footsteps as a dancer and a Buddhist nun. The epic tells her story. Avvaiyar (Sangam Poet)
Avvaiyar (Tamil: ஔவையார்) was a Tamil poet who lived during the Sangam period and is said to have had cordial relations with the Tamil chieftains Vēl Pāri and Athiyamān. She wrote 59 poems in the Puṟanāṉūṟu. A plaque on a statue of the poet in Chennai suggests the first century BCE for her birthdate. The name Avvaiyar means a 'respectable good woman', hence a generic title; her personal name is not known. Biography Avvaiyar is considered to be contemporary to poets Paranar, Kabilar and Thiruvalluvar. She is attributed as the author of 7 verses in Naṟṟiṇai, 15 in Kuṟuntokai, 4 in Akanaṉūṟu and 33 in Puṟanāṉūṟu. Legend states that she was a court poet of the rulers of the Tamil country. Dalit (outcaste)
Dalit ( from meaning "broken/scattered") is a term used for untouchables and outcasts, who represented the lowest stratum of the castes in the Indian subcontinent. They are also called Harijans. Dalits were excluded from the fourfold varna of the caste hierarchy and were seen as forming a fifth varna, also known by the name of ''Panchama''. Several scholars have drawn parallels between Dalits and the ''Burakumin'' of Japan, the ''Baekjeong'' of Korea and the peasant class of the medieval European feudal system.
