Indiana Sopris Cushman
Indiana Sopris Cushman (July 12, 1839 – September 25, 1925) was an American educator, credited as the first woman to teach school in Colorado. Early life Indiana Sopris was born in Brookville, Indiana, the daughter of Richard Sopris, a canal builder and steamboat captain, and Elizabeth Lloyd Allen Sopris. The Sopris family moved to Colorado in early 1860; her father Richard Sopris became mayor of Denver in 1878. "We found some very pleasant people," Indiana Sopris Cushman later wrote about the Denver she met in 1860. "Not very many families, mostly men, very few young ladies. My sister and I and half a dozen other young ladies were all there were in Denver. Of course we were all belles then." Brookville is a town in Brookville Township, Franklin County, Indiana, United States. The population was 2,596 at the 2010 census. The town is the county seat of and the largest community entirely within Franklin County. History Brookville was platted in 1808 by Thomas Manwarring. The town derives its name from Brooks, the maiden name of a settler's mother. A post office has been in operation at Brookville since 1816. The Brookville Historic District, Franklin County Seminary, The Hermitage, and Whitewater Canal Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Richard Sopris
Richard Sopris (1813 – 1893) was an American politician who served as the mayor of Denver, Colorado from 1878 to 1881. Prior to that, he was a prospector, Captain in the 1st Regiment of Colorado Volunteers, and a representative for what is now Colorado in the Kansas Territorial legislature. Early and personal life Richard Sopris was born on June 26, 1813 or July 26, 1813 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was married near Philadelphia to Elizabeth Allen of Trenton, New Jersey on June 3, 1836, and they moved to Indiana that year. They had eight children by 1860, and a total of ten children. His daughter, Indiana Sopris opened a school in May 1860. She was the first white woman to teach school in the city and she is credited as the first woman teacher in Colorado. Clara Brown
Clara Brown (1800–1885) was a former enslaved woman from Virginia and Kentucky who became a community leader and philanthropist. She helped formerly enslaved people become settled during Colorado's Gold Rush. She was known as the 'Angel of the Rockies' and made her mark as "Colorado's first black settler and a prosperous entrepreneur". Brown, born in Virginia in 1800, moved to Logan County, Kentucky, with her family. She married another enslaved person when she was 18 and they had four children. In 1835, Brown's family was broken apart when they were all sold to different slave owners. When Brown was 56, she received her freedom but was required by law to leave the state. She worked her way to Denver, Colorado as a cook and laundress on a wagon train. Brown settled in the mining town now called Central City, Colorado where she worked as a laundress, cook, and midwife. The Society of Colorado Pioneers was formed in 1872 to recognize and support the first Anglo American settlers in Colorado. The organization originally only for men, spun off a woman's auxiliary group and later a sons group. In 1943 the "Society of Colorado Pioneers" was consolidated into the woman's group and became the "Pioneer Men and Women of Colorado." Membership The Society of Colorado Pioneers was established to recognize pioneers who came to Colorado before 1861: Men could become full, dues-paying members. Buster Brown is a comic-strip character created in 1902 by Richard F. Outcault. Adopted as the mascot of the Brown Shoe Company in 1904, Buster Brown, along with Mary Jane, and with his dog Tige, became well known to the American public in the early-20th century. The character's name was used to describe a popular style of suit for young boys, the Buster Brown suit, that reflected his outfit. Trinidad Lake State Park is a state park west of Trinidad, Colorado, United States. The park protects Trinidad Lake, a dammed reservoir.
