Independent Ireland
Independent Ireland is a right-wing political party in Ireland. It was formed on 8 November 2023 by former independent TDs Michael Collins and Richard O'Donoghue. Collins said that the party seeks to provide "a comfortable alternative" to voters unhappy with the Fianna Fáil–Fine Gael–Green Party coalition but unwilling to vote for Sinn Féin. History Collins is the leader of the party in Dáil Éireann, while O'Donoghue serves as general secretary. O'Donoghue told the ''Irish Examiner'' that he and Collins hoped to encourage members of the Rural Independents Group in the Dáil to join. Both Collins and O'Donoghue had been members of the Rural Independents Group prior to founding the party. Michael Fitzmaurice became the party's third TD in February 2024. Michael Collins (politician, Born 1968)
Michael Collins (born 26 February 1968) is an Irish politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-West constituency since the 2016 general election. Collins is the leader of the Independent Ireland political party, which was founded in November 2023. Political career He served as a member of Cork County Council from 2014 to 2016. In May 2018, the ''Irish Independent'' published a "political rich list", outlining how much personal wealth Ireland's political class was estimated to have. The report featured Collins and estimated him to be a millionaire, suggesting he had property assets worth almost €850,000 alone. Collins was re-elected as an independent TD at the 2020 general election. Ciaran Mullooly
Ciaran Mullooly (born 4 September 1966) is an Irish Independent Ireland politician who has served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for the Midlands–North-West (European Parliament constituency), Midlands–North-West constituency since July 2024. A former journalist, he worked for RTÉ from 1993 to 2021, where he was the RTÉ News Midland Region, Ireland, Midlands correspondent for 26 years. Media career Mullooly started his career with the ''Longford Leader'' in 1985, before moving to the ''Cavan Leader'' newspaper aged 20. He joined RTÉ in 1993, where he worked on ''Ear to the Ground'', and was the RTÉ News Midlands correspondent from 1995 until 2021. 2024 Irish Local Elections
The 2024 Irish local elections were held in all local authorities in Ireland on Friday, 7 June 2024. European Parliament elections were held on the same day. It also included the 2024 Limerick mayoral election, for the first directly elected mayor in Ireland. Each local government area (a city, a county, or a city and county) is divided into local electoral areas (LEAs) where three to seven councillors are elected on the system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). This year saw a record number of women standing for election, with 31.4% (682 out of 2,171 candidates) being female. 26.1% of those elected were women (248 out of 949), a small increase compared to the last elections. Nigel Dineen
Nigel Dineen is a former Gaelic football manager and player who has served as a member of Roscommon County Council since June 2014. He played for the Castlerea St Kevin's club and at senior level for the Roscommon county team. Playing career Dineen won three Roscommon Senior Football Championship titles while playing for Castlerea St Kevin's: in 2003, 2008 and 2009. Castlerea lost to Sligo in 2010.
