Sønderborg Municipality (, ), is a '' kommune'' in the Region of Southern Denmark partially on the Jutland peninsula and partially on the island of Als in south Denmark, at the border with Germany. Sydals Municipality
Until 1 January 2007 Sydals () was a municipality ( Danish, '' kommune'') in South Jutland County on the southern part of the island of Als off the east coast of the Jutland peninsula in south Denmark. The municipality covered an area of 95 km2, and had a total population of 6,527 (2005). Its last mayor was Jens Peter Kock. The site of its municipal council was the town of Hørup. Other towns and villages in the municipality were Høruphav, Lysabild, Mommark, Skovby, Sønderby and Tandslet. Ferry service connects the former municipality at the town of Mommark to the island of Ærø at the town of Søby. The Region of Southern Denmark (, ; , ; ) is an administrative region of Denmark established on Monday 1 January 2007 as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, which abolished the traditional counties ("amter") and set up five larger regions. At the same time, smaller municipalities were merged into larger units, cutting the number of municipalities from 270 ( 271 before 2006) before 1 January 2007 to 98. The reform diminished the power of the regional level dramatically in favor of the local level and the central government in Copenhagen. The Region of Southern Denmark has 22 municipalities. The five Regions of Denmark () were created as administrative entities at a level above the municipalities and below the central government in the public sector as part of the 2007 Danish Municipal Reform, when the 13 Counties of Denmark, counties (''Amt (country subdivision), amter'') were abolished. Christian Gerthsen (21 November 1894 in Hörup, Alsen, Province of Schleswig-Holstein, German Reich – 8 December 1956 in Karlsruhe, West Germany) was a German physicist who made contributions to atomic and nuclear physics, as well as writing numerous textbooks. Education Gerthsen studied at the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg and the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich from 1913 to 1914. Circa 1914 to 1918, he served in the military. Circa 1919 to 1920 he attended the Georg-August University of Göttingen. In 1920, he went to the University of Kiel. With Walther Kreisel as his advisor, he was awarded his doctorate in 1929.
