It was discovered on 19 September 2001, by astronomers Charles W. Juels, Charles Juels and Paulo R. Holvorcem, Paulo Holvorcem at the Fountain Hills Observatory () in Arizona, United States. The asteroid was named after German astronomer Sebastian F. Hönig, Sebastian Hönig.
