Human Immunology
''Human Immunology'' is a peer-reviewed academic journal published by Elsevier. This journal features original research articles, review articles and brief communications on the subjects of immunogenetics, cellular immunology and immune regulation, and clinical immunology, and is the journal of the American Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI). The 2021 Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports impact factor for Human Immunology is 2.211. Human Immunology was established in 1980, and has published 12 issues per year since 1983. The journal has had four editors-in-chief; Bernard Amos was editor from 1980 to 1996, Nicole Suciu-Foca was editor from 1997 to 2013, Steven Mack was editor from 2014 to 2016, and Amy Hahn has been editor since 2016. Immunogenetics or immungenetics is the branch of Medical Immunology and Medical Genetics that explores the relationship between the immune system and genetics. Autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes, are complex genetic traits which result from defects in the immune system. Identification of genes defining the immune defects may identify new target genes for therapeutic approaches. Alternatively, genetic variations can also help to define the immunological pathway leading to disease. Origin The term immunogenetics is based on the two words immunology and genetics, and is defined as "a sub discipline of genetics which deals with the genetic basis of the immune response (immunity)" according to MeSH. The European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) is the European association of people with interests in the field of immunogenetics. History of the EFI During the early 1980s, members of the Committee created a more formal organisation and the organisation was made official in the mid-1980s. It was initiated to give scientists an opportunity to collaborate with one another, and to ensure that their findings were accurate and of high quality. EFI sets a series of standards for laboratories to adhere to and works to create relationships with other organisations worldwide that carry out similar work. Histocompatibility
Histocompatibility, or tissue compatibility, is the property of having the same, or sufficiently similar, alleles of a set of genes called human leukocyte antigens (HLA), or major histocompatibility complex (MHC). Each individual expresses many unique HLA proteins on the surface of their cells, which signal to the immune system whether a cell is part of the self or an invading organism. T cells recognize foreign HLA molecules and trigger an immune response to destroy the foreign cells. The National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1986 and based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, that operates the Be The Match Registry of volunteer hematopoietic cell donors and umbilical cord blood units in the United States. The human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system or complex is a complex of genes on chromosome 6 in humans which encode cell-surface proteins responsible for the regulation of the immune system.
