Aldi (German pronunciation: ), stylised as ALDI, is the common company brand name of two German multinational family-owned discount supermarket chains operating over 12,000 stores in 18 countries. The chain was founded by brothers Karl and Theo Albrecht in 1946, when they took over their mother's store in Essen. The business was split into two separate groups in 1960 that later became Aldi Nord (initially Northern West Germany), headquartered in Essen, and Aldi Süd (initially Southern West Germany), headquartered in neighbouring Mülheim. In 1962, they introduced the name Aldi (a syllabic abbreviation for "Albrecht Diskont"). Mari Ruef Hofer (1858/59-1929) was an American educator, composer, writer, and lecturer. Along with her sisters, she was a pioneer in the kindergarten movement. She gained familiary with discipline through her work in music rhythms and games. Hofer was the author of song books and books about dance. Karl Christian Ludwig Hofer or ''Carl Hofer'' (11 October 1878 – 3 April 1955) was a German expressionist painter. He was director of the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts. One of the most prominent painters of expressionism, he never was a member of one of the expressionist groups, like "Die Brücke", but was influenced by their artists. His work was among those considered degenerate art by the Nazis, but after World War II he regained recognition as one of the leading German painters. Johann Hofer
Johann Hofer (18 August 1810 in Önsbach, Baden – 4 August 1880 in Offenburg) was a German lawyer. He and his wife Amalie Hofer, née Weissenrieder (12 September 1820 in Gengenbach, 18 February 1872) were agitators and revolutionaries in the 1848 Revolution. Afterwards, he and his wife sought refuge first in Switzerland, and then from July 1851 in Hoboken, New Jersey. They were able to return home to Germany in the 1860s, and did so. Johann and Amalie were the parents of at least three children: Ernest Hofer, born in 1843, Otto Hofer, born in 1845, and Berta Amalia Mathilde Hofer, born in 1846. Helmut Otto Hofer (22 October 1912 in Mährisch Weisskirchen, Moravia - 26 July 1989 in Kassel) was an Austrian zoologist and anatomist. Hofer received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of Vienna in 1937. From 1938 until 1945 he was at the State Museum of Zoology in Dresden, Germany, although, because of the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, his work was interrupted by military service in the German army. From 1949 until 1953, he worked as a research assistant at the Zoological Institute of the University of Vienna, and from 1953 until 1965 he was a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research in Giessen and then in Frankfurt am Main. In 1965 he moved to the Delta Regional Primate Research Center (now the Tulane National Primate Research Center) in Covington, Louisiana, USA, where he remained until his retirement in 1977. Helmut Hermann W. Hofer (born February 28, 1956) is a German-American mathematician, one of the founders of the area of symplectic topology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and the recipient of the 1999 Ostrowski Prize and the 2013 Heinz Hopf Prize. Since 2009, he is a faculty member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. He currently works on symplectic geometry, dynamical systems, and partial differential equations. His contributions to the field include Hofer geometry. Hofer was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2020. He was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in 1990 in Kyoto and a plenary speaker at the ICM in 1998 in Berlin.
