is a retired Japanese female mixed martial artist. She announced her formal retirement from MMA on August 1, 2013. Akano used a song she penned herself called "Between the Sky" as her entrance music. She is a former Smackgirl Middleweight Champion at 128 pounds. Mixed martial arts career Akano made her mixed martial arts debut on November 26, 2004 against veteran Megumi Yabushita. ''Jewels 4th Ring'' was a mixed martial arts (MMA) event hosted by promotion Jewels. The event took place on at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring in Koto, Tokyo, Japan. Background On , Jewels held a press conference in which president Yuichi Ozono announced the bout between Megumi Fujii and Saori Ishioka for the show to be held at Shin-Kiba 1st Ring on , in a match that would allow ground and pound with three five-minute rounds, the first match with full MMA rules held in Jewels. Hitomi Akano was added to the card later on, along with three other matches and a few days after that, two more matches were added. Pancrase Inc. is a mixed martial arts promotion company founded in Japan in 1993 by professional wrestlers Masakatsu Funaki and Minoru Suzuki. The name was based on pankration, a fighting sport in the Ancient Olympic Games. Suzuki and Funaki practiced catch wrestling. They based the promotion and its rules on professional wrestling. The promotion's champions were called "King of Pancrase". The rules allowed closed-fisted punches, except to the head, and palm strikes to the head. A wrestler must break a submission hold when the opponent reaches the ropes, but a wrestler who claims a rope break loses a point. Roxanne Vincenta Modafferi (born September 24, 1982) is an American retired mixed martial artist, who most recently fought for the UFC. Though she last fought in the flyweight division, she has fought in multiple weight classes in her career. A professional competitor since 2003, she is considered one of the pioneers of women's MMA. Biography Modafferi is of Italian and Lithuanian descent. Modafferi's training began in taekwondo at the age of 13 in Pennsylvania, moving on to Mark Lawler's Kenpō Karate in the high school.
