Hiram Barnes
Hiram Barnes (19 October 1832 – 24 April 1917) was a Queensland businessman, born in Beckley, Sussex, noted for his association with Cobb and Co. History He came to Australia as a boy with his parents on the ''Duchess of Northumberland'', arriving in Sydney in 1837, attended Staff School, and lived some time in Kissing Point, New South Wales, then in 1847 moved to Victoria. He joined the gold rush, first to Black Hill, then Forest Creek and Friars Creek, the last of which made him a fortune, and he returned to live with his father in St Kilda. He started a business with three horse teams, carrying between St. Kilda, Castlemaine, and Bendigo. In 1858 he joined the rush to Rockhampton, Queensland, but was unsuccessful and returned to the carrying business, with Hobby and Hewstead, a competitor to Cobb and Co. who shortly took them over. Toowoomba ( , nicknamed 'The Garden City' and 'T-Bar') is a city in the Toowoomba Region of the Darling Downs, Queensland, Australia. It is west of Queensland's capital city Brisbane by road. Walter Barnes (politician)
Walter Henry Barnes (7 September 1858 – 19 February 1933) was a longtime member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early years Barnes was born in Castlemaine, Victoria, a son of Hiram Barnes, who took his family to Queensland when he was six years old. He gained employment in the saddler business, then worked as a driver for Cobb and Co. coaches. He next worked for the Post Office, then in 1884 joined his brother's firm of Barnes and Co. Ltd., produce and general merchants. He held the position of manager of the Roma Street business for very many years, and ultimately became managing director of the company. Politics For 25 years he was a member of the Coorparoo Shire Council, of which body he was five times Chairman. He first entered Parliament in 1901 as member for Bulimba, succeeding Sir James R. Toowong is a riverside suburb in the City of Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. In the , Toowong had a population of 10,830 people. Geography Toowong is situated between Mount Coot-tha and the Brisbane River and is made up of rolling hills with little flat land. Teetotalism is the practice or promotion of total personal abstinence from the psychoactive drug alcohol, specifically in alcoholic drinks.
