''Her Country First'' is a 1918 American comedy silent film directed by James Young and written by Edith Kennedy and Mary Roberts Rinehart. The film stars Vivian Martin, John Cossar, Florence Oberle, J. Parks Jones, Larry Steers, and Bernadine Zuber. The film was released on September 22, 1918, by Paramount Pictures. There are no listings for this film in the Library of Congress's database which suggest that it is a lost film. Plot Dorothy Grant returns from boarding school so fired up with patriotism that she organizes her friends into a military company they call the Girls' Aviation Corps with help from a woman farmer who served in the military. Dorothy then discovers that German spies have come to town to get access to her father's munitions plant. James Young (director)
James Young (January 1, 1872 – June 9, 1948) was an American film director, actor, and screenwriter of the silent era. Before films, Young had a successful career as a stage actor appearing on Broadway and throughout the country, and was the author of a notable 1905 book on theatrical makeup. Young directed more than 90 films between 1912 and 1928. He also appeared as an actor in 60 films between 1909 and 1917. His first wife was librettist Rida Johnson Young who often composed with Victor Herbert. His second wife was film actress Clara Kimball Young, 18 years his junior, who kept his surname after they divorced. James Young died in New York City on June 9, 1948. Lost Film
A lost film is a feature film, feature or short film in which the original negative or copies are not known to exist in any studio archive, private collection, or public archive. Films can be wholly or partially lost for a number of reasons. Early films were not thought to have value beyond their theatrical run, so many were discarded afterward. Nitrate film used in early pictures was highly flammable and susceptible to degradation. The Library of Congress began acquiring copies of American films in 1909, but not all were kept. Due to improvements in film technology and recordkeeping, few films produced in the 1950s or beyond have been lost. Marcella Daly (1901–1966) was an American film actress of the silent era. Daly was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. H. Daly and a graduate of the Whittier School and Hollywood High School. In June 1924, Daly received publicity when casting director Lewis Mason committed suicide and left a note that said, in part, "Everything I have, please give to Marcella Daly." Audrey Chapman (March 2, 1899 – August 10, 1993) was an actress in motion pictures of the silent film era from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A niece of Hampton Del Ruth and Roy Del Ruth, Chapman was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward a Bigley. She was educated in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, California. She went from a finishing school directly into movies. In ' (1920) she played the character of Mary Holmes in a photoplay written by Upton Sinclair. The setting is the "Oriental underworld" of New York City. Chapman dons twenty-two gowns in all, ranging from filmy negligee to elaborate fur-trimmed costumes. She was among the cast of ''Wildfire'' (1921), based on a Zane Grey novel. Two complete producing crews shot the movie, which was an outdoor narrative.
