Henry Prince (chief)
Henry Prince ( c. 1819 – June 7, 1899), born Pa-bat-or-kok-or-sis or Mis-koo-kenew ('Red Eagle'), was a Saulteaux Indian chief of the Peguis First Nation. Early life Pa-bat-or-kok-or-sis was born in a settlement along the banks of the Netley Creek about down river from future site of the St. Peter's Church and settlement (approx. 1837), to Chief Peguis and Victoria, one of his wives. He attended school at a one-room schoolhouse operated out of the St. Peter's Church, and was baptized Henry Prince in 1837. In 1840, he married Sarah Badger, with whom he had at least 6 children. In 1864, after the death of his father, he became Chief of the St. Peter's Indian Band (later called the Peguis First Nation). Joseph Provencher
Joseph Alfred Norbert Provencher (1843–1887) was a Canadian pioneer, politician and newspaper editor. He served as a member of the Council of Keewatin from 1876 to 1877 and as Indian Agent for the Government of the Northwest Territories. Political career Provencher ran for a seat in the House of Commons of Canada in the first 1867 Canadian federal election. In a close race for the electoral district of Yamaska he was defeated by Moïse Fortier Moïse (Moyse) Fortier (November 6, 1815 – October 17, 1877) was a Quebec businessman and political figure. David Mills (Canadian Politician)
David Mills, (March 18, 1831 – May 8, 1903) was a Canadian politician, author, poet and puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. He was born in Palmyra, in southwestern Upper Canada (now Ontario). His father, Nathaniel Mills, was one of the first settlers in the area. Mills served as superintendent of schools for Kent County from 1856 to 1865. He then attended the University of Michigan School of law, graduating with honors in 1867 with an LL.B degree. He published ''The Present and Future Political Aspects of Canada'' in 1860 and ''The Blunders of the Dominion Government in connection with the North-West Territory'' in 1871. Mills was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) in the 1867 federal election and re-elected in four subsequent votes until being defeated in the 1882 election. In United States history, an Indian agent was an individual authorized to interact with American Indian tribes on behalf of the government. Background The federal regulation of Indian affairs in the United States first included development of the position of Indian agent in 1793 under the Second Trade and Intercourse Act (or the Nonintercourse Act). This required land sales by or from Indians to be federally licensed and permitted. The legislation also authorized the president of the United States to "appoint such persons, from time to time, as temporary agents to reside among the Indians," and guide them into acculturation of American society by changing their agricultural practices and domestic activities. ''Treaty 1'' (also known as the "Stone Fort Treaty") is an agreement established on August 3, 1871, between the Imperial Crown of Great Britain and Ireland and the Anishinabe and Swampy Cree nations. The first of a series of treaties called the Numbered Treaties that occurred between 1871–1921, this accord has been held to be essentially about peace and friendship. However, the eight days of treaty-making ended with the indigenous groups agreeing to "cede, release, surrender and yield up to Her Majesty the Queen and successors forever all the lands" in southern Manitoba to the Crown, in exchange for an annual annuity and material goods such as clothing and agricultural supplies. Wemyss Mackenzie Simpson
Wemyss Mackenzie (McKenzie) Simpson (March 30, 1824 – March 31, 1894) was a Canadian fur trader and political figure. He represented Algoma in the House of Commons of Canada as a Conservative member from 1867 to 1871. He was born in London, England in 1824, the son of Geddes Mackenzie Simpson. He studied at Eton College and came to Lower Canada in 1841 as an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company. Simpson served with the company until 1864, serving as the last factor for the post at Sault Ste. Marie, where he settled after his retirement. His cousin, George Simpson, was a governor of the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1870, Simpson acted as guide and interpreter for the Red River Expeditionary Force. In 1871, he was named Indian Commissioner for Rupert's Land and resigned from his seat in the House of Commons.
