Hendrika Johanna Van Leeuwen
Hendrika Johanna van Leeuwen (July 3, 1887 – February 26, 1974) was a Dutch physicist known for her early contributions to the theory of magnetism. She studied at Leiden University under the guidance of Hendrik Antoon Lorentz, obtaining her doctorate in 1919. Her thesis explained why magnetism is an essentially quantum mechanical effect, a result now referred to as the Bohr–Van Leeuwen theorem. (Niels Bohr had arrived at the same conclusion a few years earlier.) She continued to investigate magnetic materials at the "Technische Hogeschool Delft" (now called the Delft University of Technology), first as "assistant" between September 1920 and April 1947, and then she was promoted to " lector in de theoretische en toegepaste natuurkunde" (reader in theoretical and applied physics). Hendrika Cornelia "Rie" de Balbian Verster-Bolderheij (born Hendrika Cornelia Bolderheij; 25 February 1890 – 12 March 1990) was a Dutch painter. She attended the (''English:Day drawing school for girls'') in Amsterdam. She submitted some of her work into the "Paintings" event of the "Mixed Painting" category of the art competitions at the 1928 Summer Olympics, but did not win a medal. Background Born in Amsterdam in 1890, she married publicist Jan François Leopold de Balbian Verster in 1910. She was a member of Amsterdam's Arti et Amicitiae society and the Vereeniging Sint Lucas (Amsterdam). Balbian Verster-Bolderheij's work was included in the 1939 exhibition and sale ''Onze Kunst van Heden'' (Our Art of Today) at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Hendrika Hofhuis
Hendrika Hofhuis (1780–1849), was a Dutch woman, famous for being put on trial for witchcraft in 1823. While this was not a real witch trial, she was the last person to be formally charged with such a crime in the Netherlands. Life Hofhuis was born to a farmer and married to a farmer in Deldenerbroek. In 1823, she contacted the authorities and demanded to be tried by water for witchcraft, in order to clear her name for the rumours of sorcery that were circulating about her. She had been turned away from a sick child's bed because she was said to be responsible. The rumours had increased to such a degree that her own children suspected her. The Dutch authorities did no longer believe in witchcraft. However, while witch trials, at this point, had not been conducted in the Netherlands for over a century, the law which made witchcraft illegal had never been abolished, and thus made it possible to conduct such an investigation. Hendrika Wilhelmina "Rie" Mastenbroek (26 February 1919 – 6 November 2003) was a Dutch swimmer and a triple Olympic champion. Biography Born in Rotterdam, she started swimming under the coaching of "Ma" Braun, who had coached her daughter to an Olympic gold medal in 1928. In 1934, Mastenbroek won three gold medals and a silver at the European Championships. She repeated that performance at the 1936 Summer Olympics, aged only 17, winning the 100 m freestyle, 400 m freestyle and the 4×100 m freestyle. In the 100 m backstroke, she finished second behind teammate Nida Senff. (Senff missed a turning point and had to swim back before completing the last 50 m. Hetty (Hendrika) Margaretha van Gurp (born 1949, in Delft) is a Canadian educator. Appointments In 1995, Hetty was appointed to a two-year term as a member of the federal Human Rights Tribunal Panel. In 1996, she was awarded the YMCA Peace Medal. The Nova Scotia School Administrators' Association recognized her contribution to education by presenting her with the "Principal of Distinction" award in 1998.
