Helmuth Liesegang
Helmuth Heinrich Liesegang (18 July 1858, Duisburg - 31 July 1945, Leipzig) was a German landscape painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work He was the son of a gymnasium teacher, Helmuth Karl Albert Liesegang, and his wife, Agnes née Jüngel. In 1868, his family moved to Kleve, where his father was head of the for twenty-eight years. As a teenager, he loved to roam through the surrounding woods, sketching. After completing his secondary education, he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied from 1877 to 1885. His primary instructor there was Eugen Dücker. He also learned etching from Carl Ernst Forberg. In 1885, together with his friend, Arthur Kampf, he visited Paris, where he came under the influence of the Barbizon school; especially Jean-François Millet and Jules Bastien-Lepage. Olof August Andreas Jernberg (23 May 1855, Düsseldorf - 15 February 1935, Berlin) was a German landscape and marine painter of Swedish ancestry; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work His father was the Swedish Genre art, genre painter, August Jernberg. After completing his secondary education, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf from 1875 to 1876. His primary instructors were Andreas Müller (painter), Andreas Müller and Heinrich Lauenstein. Later, he worked with Karl Müller (painter), Karl Müller, and became a private student of Eugen Dücker, with whom he studied landscape painting until 1879. Friedrich Schaarschmidt (4 February 1863 – 12 June 1902) was a German landscape painter and figure painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting, conservator and art writer. Life Born in Bonn, Schaarschmidt was born in Bonn as the son of Professor Carl Schaarschmidt (1822-1908), a philosophy historian and head of the Bonn University Library. From 1880 until 1889, he studied painting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. There, Hugo Crola, Johann Peter Theodor Janssen and Wilhelm Sohn, temporarily also Eduard von Gebhardt and Carl Ernst Forberg, were his teachers. As a practising artist, Schaarschmidt turned to En plein air. He often decorated his landscape paintings with figures in antique robes. Young Rhineland (Das Junge Rheinland) was an association of avant-garde artists formed in Düsseldorf on 24 February 1919. History The poet Herbert Eulenberg was one of the main instigators of the group, along with painter Arthur Kaufmann and the writer and illustrator Adolf Uzarski. The Deutscher Kuenstlerbund (Association of German Artists) was founded in 1903 the initiative of Count Harry Kessler, promoter of arts and artists, Alfred Lichtwark, director of the Hamburg Art Gallery and the famous painters Lovis Corinth, Max Klinger and Max Liebermann among others. Thus a supra-regional association which surpassed the existing secessions came into existence for the first time. Bettina Baumgärtel (born 1957) is a German art historian who is head of the painting collection of the Museum Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf. She is a leading authority on the art of Angelica Kauffman and founded the Angelika Kauffmann Research Project (AKRP), of which she is the director, in 1990. Bettina Baumgärtel studied art history, archaeology and philosophy at the University of Bonn and the Free University of Berlin. In 1987 she completed her PhD with a dissertation on Angelica Kauffman and the conditions for feminine creativity in the painting of the eighteenth century, supervised by Eduard Trier in Bonn. Gustav Wendling (7 June 1862, Büddenstedt - 17 October 1932, Königslutter) was a German history, landscape and marine painter; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work At the age of seventeen, he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied landscape painting with Eugen Dücker. From 1884 to 1886, he was Dücker's master student. Otto Theodor Rudolf Heichert (27 February 1868, in Gröningen Priory – 22 March 1946, in Oberschönau, near Berchtesgaden) was a German painter and graphic artist; associated with the Düsseldorfer Malerschule. Life and work He was the first of four children born to Rudolf Wilhelm August Heichert, the caretaker of a monastery, and his wife, Marie Sophie née Hohmann.
