''Heavy Gear'' is a 1997 computer game made for the Windows 95 operating system, based on the '' Heavy Gear'' role-playing game. A sequel, ''Heavy Gear II'', was released in 1999. Plot The story follows the crew of the CNCS landship ''Vigilance'' (an enormous hovercraft carrier) as they played a cat-and-mouse game across the badlands with a rival landship from the AST, the ''Draco''. Development Faced with the loss of the ''BattleTech''-''MechWarrior'' property, Activision acquired exclusive worldwide rights to video games based on the ''Heavy Gear'' series. ''Heavy Gear'' was developed by largely the same team which created ''Mechwarrior 2'', though with the significant addition of Frank Evers, then best known for '' Earthsiege 2''. The game used an enhanced version of the ''Mechwarrior 2'' game engine, and was partly derived from existing '' MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries'' code. Francis "Frank" Anthony Evers (born 1965) is an Irish & American businessman and film/TV producer, the CEO of Institute, Institute Artist, the Story Institute, and the president of Evergreen Pictures and Girl Culture Films. ''Computer Gaming World'' (CGW) was an American Video game journalism, computer game magazine that was published between 1981 and 2006. One of the few magazines of the era to survive the video game crash of 1983, it was sold to Ziff Davis in 1993. It expanded greatly through the 1990s and became one of the largest dedicated video game magazines, reaching around 500 pages by 1997. GameRankings was a video gaming review aggregator that was founded in 1999 and owned by CBS Interactive. It indexed over 315,000 articles relating to more than 14,500 video games. GameRankings was discontinued in December 2019, with its staff being merged with the similar aggregator Metacritic. Rankings GameRankings collected and linked to (but did not host) reviews from other websites and magazines and averages specific ones.
