Hate Your Friends
''Hate Your Friends'' is the debut album of the American alternative rock band The Lemonheads. Produced and released on Boston-based indie label Taang Records and licensed for simultaneous release to several other labels worldwide, the album showcases the band's early sound and punk roots. ''Hate Your Friends'' is also one of only three albums to feature the Lemonheads' original lineup with Evan Dando, Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz. Recording and release The album's track listing has varied from format-to-format and is culled from a few different recording sessions. The seven songs on side one of the 1987 LP show the band as a four-piece outfit, with Doug Trachten playing drums freeing up Dando and Deily to both man their guitars and switch off on lead vocals while Peretz played bass. The six songs on side two were recorded before Trachten joined the band back when Dando and Deily traded duties on guitar and drums. Alternative Rock
Alternative rock (also known as alternative music, alt-rock or simply alternative) is a category of rock music that evolved from the independent music underground of the 1970s. Alternative rock acts achieved mainstream success in the 1990s with the likes of the grunge subgenre in the United States, and the Britpop and shoegaze subgenres in the United Kingdom and Ireland. During this period, many record labels were looking for "alternatives", as many Arena rock, corporate rock, hard rock, and glam metal acts from the 1980s were beginning to grow stale throughout the music industry. Proud Scum
Proud Scum was a notable punk band in New Zealand punk's second wave. Proud Scum were formed in Auckland in 1979 and attracted a hardcore punk and bootboy following. Formed from members of punk bands Rooter and The Atrocities, Proud Scum were: Jonathan Jamrag (Griffiths) (vocals), John Atrocity (Jenkins) (guitar), Alastair Rabbit (Duguid) (bass), and Bruce Diode (Hoffman) (drums). Atrocity left in June 1979 (replaced by Sid Scum). Atrocity's departure was inspiration for one of the band's best known tracks, "Suicide 2", which encourages him to "...jump off Grafton Bridge". They are also known for the tracks "I am a Rabbit" (covered by The Lemonheads for their debut EP in 1986), and "Suicide". John Newton
John Newton (; – 21 December 1807) was an English evangelical Anglican cleric and slavery Abolitionism, abolitionist. He had previously been a captain of slave ships and an investor in the slave trade. He served as a sailor in the Royal Navy (after forced recruitment) and was himself enslaved for a time in West Africa. He is noted for being author of the hymns ''Amazing Grace'' and ''Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken''. Newton went to sea at a young age and worked on slave ships in the Atlantic slave trade, slave trade for several years. In 1745, he himself became a slave of Princess Peye, a woman of the Sherbro people in what is now Sierra Leone. He was rescued, returned to sea and the trade, becoming Captain of several slave ships. Amazing Grace
"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn written in 1772 and published in 1779 by English Anglican clergyman and poet John Newton (1725–1807). It is possibly the most sung and most recorded hymn in the world, and especially popular in the United States, where it is used for both religious and secular purposes. Newton wrote the words from personal experience; he grew up without any particular religious conviction, but his life's path was formed by a variety of twists and coincidences that were often put into motion by others' reactions to what they took as his recalcitrant insubordination. Jesse Peretz
Jesse Peretz (born May 19, 1968) is an American film and television director, TV producer and former musician. He first rose to prominence as a bass guitarist and founding member of The Lemonheads, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based band that formed in 1986. Peretz left the band as a musician shortly before its breakout album, '' It's a Shame About Ray'', was released, but stayed on as the band photographer. After leaving The Lemonheads, he began to work extensively as a director, first in short-form works such as television commercials and music videos, later transitioning to feature films and television series. His directorial work includes the films ''Our Idiot Brother'' and '' Juliet, Naked'', and the TV series '' Girls''. Ben Deily is an American musician and songwriter, most famous as one of the founders, writers and lead singers (along with Evan Dando) of the Boston-based alternative rock band The Lemonheads. Deily and Dando met while students at the Commonwealth School in Boston. Advertising career After leaving the Lemonheads to complete his degree in English & American Literature, Ben graduated ''cum laude'' from Harvard University in 1994. Since then he has worked in the advertising industry—as a copywriter and as a Creative Director—while living in Boston, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Portland, Maine. Evan Dando
Evan Griffith Dando (born March 4, 1967) is an American musician and the frontman of the rock band the Lemonheads. He has also embarked on a solo career and collaborated on songs with various artists. In December 2015, Dando was inducted into the Boston Music Awards Hall of Fame. Early life and education Dando was born in Essex, Massachusetts, on Boston's North Shore, to Susan, a former fashion model, and Jeffrey, who worked as a real estate attorney. At the age of nine, his family moved from Essex to Boston; his parents divorced two years later. In his teens Dando attended Commonwealth School in Boston. In the fall of 1986 he enrolled at Skidmore College but dropped out after getting "four Fs and a D."
