Hariprasad Vyas
Hariprasad Maniray Vyas (25 May 1904 – 13 July 1980) was a Gujarati humorist and author of children's literature. Life Hariprasad Vyas was born on 25 May 1904 in Bodka village near Vadodara, Gujarat. He passed matriculation in 1921 in Vadodara. He served as Manager in the office of Zenith Life and General Insurance from 1925 to his retirement. He died on 13 July 1980 in San Jose, California, US. Works Hariprasad Vyas created several popular fictional characters for children's literature in Gujarati language including Bakor Patel, Shakri Patlani, Vaghjibhai Vakil, Untadiya Doctor, Hathishankar Dhamdhamiya, Bhotvashankar. He wrote humorous stories of Bakor Patel in children's biweekly ''Gandiv'' published by Gandiv Sahitya Madir, Surat from 1936 to 1955. These stories are later published as story collections. Vadodara (), also known as Baroda, is the second largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat. Children's Literature In Gujarati Language
The Children's literature in Gujarati language of India has its roots in traditional folk literature, Puranic literature, epics and fables from Sanskrit literature. Following 1830s, the large number of stories and fables adapted and translated from various traditional and western sources started to appear in Gujarati. Led by Gijubhai Badheka and Nanabhai Bhatt, the children's literature expanded rapidly in form of stories, poems, rhymes and riddles. Several authors and poets wrote for children intermittently and exclusively. Large number of magazines catering to children were published by middle of twentieth century. Later adventure novels, science fiction, young-adult fiction were also published. Ramanlal Soni and Jivram Joshi contributed for five decades creating stories, fictional characters and novels. Children's literature or juvenile literature includes stories, books, magazines, and poems that are created for children. Modern children's literature is classified in two different ways: genre or the intended age of the reader. Bakor Patel is children's literature character created by Hariprasad Vyas for talking animal stories. The stories were published in ''Gandiv'', a children's biweekly in Gujarati language by Gandiv Sahitya Mandir, Surat, Gujarat, India. The humorous stories about Bakor Patel first appeared in 1936 and continued till 1955. The stories included other anthropomorphic characters including his wife, Shakri Patlani. The stories were accompanied with an illustration and title printed in typical typography; drawn by two Surat based artist brothers, Tansukh and Mansukh. The character became the icon of Gujarati children's literature and was later adapted into a children's play.
