The India national badminton team is the representative of India in international men's and women's badminton team tournaments. It is governed by the Badminton Association of India. The men's team won the Thomas Cup in 2022, while the women's team have been semi-finalists at the Uber Cup in 2014 and 2016. The team competed in the 2011 Sudirman Cup and shared the fifth rank and also repeated the performance in 2017. The Indian team is currently 8th in the world rankings. The players have won 3 medals at the Summer Olympics, 14 at the World Championships, 7 at the Asian Games, 18 at the Asian Championships and 25 at the Commonwealth Games. Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma (born 1 February 1969) is an Indian politician and lawyer serving as the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam since 2021. A former member of the Indian National Congress, Sarma joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 August 2015 and soon was made convenor of NEDA. He is a five time Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly from Jalukbari, having been elected since 2001. Early life and education Sarma was born on 1 February 1969 in Jorhat, Assam, the family, including six siblings, later shifted to Ulubari, Gandhibasti in Guwahati. He belongs to an Assamese family which traces its origins to Latima in Nalbari district. Badminton At The Commonwealth Games
Badminton had its debut at the 1966 Commonwealth Games and has been contested in 14 consecutive Commonwealth Games since. Editions History Badminton was added to the Commonwealth Games program in 1966, as an optional sport. The sport was chosen to replace lawn bowls, due the lack of facilities at Jamaica. Having this status until the 1994 edition, when it became a mandatory sport. In the first three editions, five events were played (men's and women's singles, men's and women's doubles and mixed doubles). Between 1978 and 1990 a sixth event was in the program (the mixed team competition). Also between 1966 and 1990, one bronze medal was at stake. Between 1994 and 2002, the losers of the two semifinals also won two bronze medals. Badminton has been one of the regular Asian Games sports since 1962 in Jakarta, Indonesia. History Badminton made its debut in the Asian Games as a demonstration sport at the 1958 Asian Games in Tokyo, Japan, and became a regular competitive sport in 1962. In the 1962 Games, six events were held, with singles, doubles and team event for both men and women. The mixed doubles event was added in 1966 Asian Games. BWF World Championships
The BWF World Championships is a badminton tournament organized by the Badminton World Federation. It's the most prestigious badminton competition, offering the most ranking points, along with the Summer Olympics badminton events introduced in 1992. The winners of the tournament are World Champions of the sport and are awarded a gold medal. The tournament started in 1977 and was held once every three years until 1983. However, the International Badminton Federation faced difficulty in hosting the first two events as the World Badminton Federation, which later merged with the IBF to form one badminton federation, hosted the same tournament a year after the IBF World Championships with the same goals. Since 1985, the tournament became biennial and played once every two years until 2005. Starting 2006, the tournament was changed to an annual event on the BWF calendar. India At The 2011 Sudirman Cup
The 2011 Sudirman Cup was the twelfth tournament of the Sudirman Cup. It was held from May 22–29, 2011 in Qingdao, China. According to the Badminton World Federation (BWF) 32 teams confirmed their participation, for the first time twelve teams competed in the elite group to battle for the title. China defeated Denmark 3–0 in the final to win the Cup for the fourth consecutive time and eight time overall. The Uber Cup, sometimes called the World Women's Team Championships, is a major international badminton competition contested by women's national badminton teams. First held in 1956–1957 and contested at three year intervals, it has been contested every two years since 1984 when its scheduled times and venues were merged with those of Thomas Cup, the world men's team championship. In 2007, the Badminton World Federation decided to have Thomas and Uber Cup finals separated again but the proposal was ultimately abandoned. The Uber Cup is named after a former British women's badminton player, Betty Uber, who in 1950 had the idea of hosting a women's event similar to the men's. She also made the draw for the 1956–1957 inaugural tournament, which took place at Lytham St. Annes in Lancashire, England.
