Happy José (Ching Ching)
"Happy José (Ching Ching)" is a Mexican-influenced instrumental song released by a number of artists. It was first released in 1960 by Dave Appell and the Applejacks. Background The song has the same melody as "Happy Homer", an instrumental recorded by Bill Haley & His Comets for Warner Bros. Records in 1960 (however, that particular recording would not receive commercial release until Bear Family Records included it in the 1999 box set ''The Warner Bros. Years and More''). It's not clear if this was the first version or the one from Dave Appell. Song structure Jack Ross' version uses the "Ching ching ching, oop-bop a-loop-a loop" lyrics in refrain, with backing orchestra and random outbursts of laughter between the singing. The Ross single came in a red sleeve with a comic figure on the front and is now considered rare and collectible. Dave Appell And The Applejacks
David Appell (March 24, 1922 – November 18, 2014) was an American musician, musical arranger and record producer born in Philadelphia. Career Appell (pronounced "AP-el") is associated mainly with the Cameo-Parkway record label, in whose history he played a substantial part. He started working as an arranger for several United States Navy big bands in the mid-1940s during his service in World War II, including Jimmie Lunceford's black orchestra. He later arranged for dance orchestras, including Benny Carter and Earl "Fatha" Hines. He recorded for a while on Decca Records as the Dave Appell Four, until Paul Cohen of Decca suggested he change the group name to the Applejacks. Appell also became a publisher, joining ASCAP in 1955, collaborating with Max Freedman. He appeared prominently in the 1956 Alan Freed film, ''Don't Knock the Rock'', and worked for a while as the studio band and music director on the Ernie Kovacs TV and radio shows in Philadelphia. Bill Haley & His Comets were an American rock and roll band founded in 1947 that continued until Haley's death in 1981. The band was also known as Bill Haley and the Comets and Bill Haley's Comets. From late 1954 to late 1956, the group record nine Top 20 singles, one of which was number one and three that were Top Ten. The single "Rock Around the Clock" was the best-selling rock single in the history of the genre and maintained that position for several years.
