Hans Ulrich Engelmann
Hans Ulrich Engelmann (8 September 1921 in Darmstadt - 8 January 2011) was a German composer. Biography Engelmann studied composition with Hermann Heiss and Wolfgang Fortner. He was a regular attendee of the Darmstadt International Summer Courses for New Music, and he was particularly affected by the twelve-tone classes of René Leibowitz (1948) and Ernst Krenek (1951), which helped him move from free atonality to serialism. Eventually, he would publish a history of the courses. In 1947, he began studying musicology with Gennrich Friedrich and Helmut Osthoff, earning a Ph.D in 1952. He also studied philosophy with Theodor Adorno, Max Horkheimer, Hans-Georg Gadamer. A brief marriage took him to Iceland from 1953-4, before returning to Darmstadt to work as the music adviser and composer for the Hessisches Landestheater for the next seven years. The ''Handelsblatt'' (literally "commerce paper" in English) is a German-language business newspaper published in Düsseldorf by Handelsblatt Media Group, formerly known as Verlagsgruppe Handelsblatt. Goethe Medal
The Goethe Medal, also known as the Goethe-Medaille, is a yearly prize given by the Goethe-Institut honoring non-Germans "who have performed outstanding service for the German language and for international cultural relations". It is an official decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. The prize used to be given on 22 March, the anniversary of Goethe's death. Since 2009, it has been given on 28 August, the anniversary of Goethe's birth. The first awards were made in 1955. In the intervening years, through 2018, a total of 348 women and men from 65 countries have been so honored. Claus Kühnl
Claus Kühnl (born in Arnstein, Lower Franconia, 17 November 1957) is a German composer and teacher. Life Kühnl is the eldest child of Gudrun Kühnl (''née'' Schmitt) from Lower Franconia and Wilhelm Kühnl who comes from the Sudetenland. His musical training began in 1973, first as an external student during his last years of high school and later, as a student at the Hochschule für Musik in Würzburg, studying with Bertold Hummel (composition), Julian von Károlyi (piano), Hanns Reinartz (conducting) and Zsolt Gárdonyi (theory). Important for him at this time were analysis courses in New Music with Klaus Hinrich Stahmer and, from 1978 to 1980, the Student Chamber Orchestra "Musici Allegri", which he himself conducted. Hans-Jürgen Von Bose
Hans-Jürgen von Bose (born 24 December 1953) is a German composer. Life After an unsettled adolescence, Bose entered the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt in 1969, where he received instruction in piano and music theory. Upon graduating from the conservatory, he studied composition (under Hans Ulrich Engelmann), piano ( under Klaus Billing), and conducting at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts. After attending the Darmstädter Ferienkurse in 1974 and the premiere of his First String Quartet, he was awarded several scholarships, among others from the Mozart Foundation and the German National Academic Foundation. In 1976, Bose dropped out of school in Frankfurt and settled in Munich as a freelance artist. Gerhard Müller-Hornbach
Gerhard Müller-Hornbach (born 26 February 1951 as Gerhard Müller) is a German composer, conductor and music teacher. Life Müller-Hornbach was born in Hornbach. From 1981 to 2016, as a professor for composition and music theory, he taught at the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts where he headed the composition department and co-founded the Institute for Contemporary Music (IzM) in 2005 of which he was director. Awards Müller-Hornbach was awarded the Villa Massimo prize in 1983/84. In 2006 he received the Johann Vaillant Composition Prize endowed with 2500 Euro at the 6th Bergische Biennale.
