Goethe Medal
The Goethe Medal, also known as the Goethe-Medaille, is a yearly prize given by the Goethe-Institut honoring non-Germans "who have performed outstanding service for the German language and for international cultural relations". It is an official decoration of the Federal Republic of Germany. The prize used to be given on 22 March, the anniversary of Goethe's death. Since 2009, it has been given on 28 August, the anniversary of Goethe's birth. The first awards were made in 1955. In the intervening years, through 2018, a total of 348 women and men from 65 countries have been so honored. It is not to be confused with '' Goethe-Medaille für Kunst und Wissenschaft'' (1932–1944) and '' Goetheplakette der Stadt Frankfurt am Main''. The German Federal Archives or Bundesarchiv (BArch) (, lit. "Federal Archive") are the national archives of Germany. They were established at the current location in Koblenz in 1952. They are subordinated to the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (Claudia Roth since 2021) under the German Chancellery, and before 1998, to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. On 6 December 2008, the Archives donated 100,000 photos to the public, by making them accessible via Wikimedia Commons. Toshio Hosokawa
is a Japanese composer of contemporary classical music. He studied in Germany but returned to Japan, finding a personal style inspired by classical Japanese music and culture. He has composed operas, the oratorio '' Voiceless Voice in Hiroshima'', and instrumental music. He was the cofounder and artistic director of a Japanese festival for contemporary music and has been a composer in residence at international festivals such as the Venice Biennale, Lucerne Festival, Warsaw Autumn and Rheingau Musik Festival. His operas premiered at the Munich Biennale and La Monnaie, among others. Career Hosokawa was born in Hiroshima. He first studied piano and composition in Tokyo, then from 1976 with Yun Isang at the Berlin University of the Arts. Rolf Abderhalden
Rolf Abderhalden Cortés (born 1965) is a Colombian artist and theatre director. He was born in Manizales. He studied and practised the visual arts, before expanding quickly into other areas, notably theatre and set design. His work till date encompasses performance, installation, video installation, etc. and has been presented at unconventional spaces across Europe and America. He and his elder sister Heidi Abderhalden co-founded Mapa Teatro in Paris in 1984, before moving it to Bogota in 1986. His sister Elizabeth remained in Paris but she continued to be the theatre's costume designer. It is now known as one of the leading artistic companies in Colombia. Abderhalden also runs an arts studio at the Biblioteca Luís Ángel Arango, and since 1986 has taught at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Heidi Abderhalden
Heidi Abderhalden (born 1962) is a Swiss-Colombian artist and theatre director. In 1984 she co-founded and since then she has co-directed Mapa Teatro in Bogotá. Together with her co-director and brother, Abderhalden has been recognised for her notable efforts in breaking down cultural barriers through fifty years of dedicated work. In 2018, they were honoured with the Goethe Medal, a prestigious award in the field of culture and arts. Life She was born in Bogotá. Her mother was Colombian and her father was Swiss. Doğan Akhanlı
Doğan Akhanlı (; 18 March 1957 – 31 October 2021) was a Turkish-born German writer, and author of novels, plays, and essays, mostly in Turkish. He had been living in exile in Germany since 1992, after his political views led to several arrests in Turkey. His work is focused on the major genocides of the 20th century, the systematic extermination of the Armenians and the Jews. Critics praised him for his storytelling and his engagement in human rights work. In 2019, he was awarded the Goethe Medal for his political engagement, in particular for more understanding between Armenians, Turks, and Kurds. Shirin Neshat (; born March 26, 1957) is an Iranian photographer and visual artist who lives in New York City, known primarily for her work in film, video and photography. Her artwork centers on the contrasts between Islam and the West, femininity and masculinity, public life and private life, antiquity and modernity, and bridging the spaces between these subjects. Since the Islamic Revolution, she has said that she has "gravitated toward making art that is concerned with tyranny, dictatorship, oppression and political injustice. Elvira Espejo Ayca
Elvira Espejo Ayca (born 1981) is an Indigenous Bolivian artist, poet, and the director of the National Museum of Ethnography and Folklore in La Paz until 2020. In 2020 she was a joint winner of the Goethe Medal for improving cultural exchange. She is Aymara and Quechua and speaks both of the Aymara and Quechua languages. Life Ayca was born in the Bolivian Oruro Department in 1981. She was brought up in an Indigenous community in the Eduardo Abaroa Province. She was not only encouraged to have ambition and to leave her Ayllu (village community to learn more) named Qaqachaka, but she always remembered her own culture.
