Günter Wyszecki
Günter Wolfgang Wyszecki (November 08, 1925 – June 22, 1985) was a German-Canadian physicist who made important contributions to the fields of colorimetry and color vision. Education and personal life Wyszecki was born in Tilsit, East Prussia, Germany (today Sovetsk, Russia). He attended the Technische Universität Berlin where he was awarded a Dr.-Ing. degree, with a dissertation on normal and anomalous trichromacy. In 1953 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and for a year joined Deane B. Judd at the Colorimetry and Photometry section of the U. S. National Bureau of Standards in Washington DC. He was married to Ingeborg Wyszecki, and had two children named Joana & Wolfgang. He became a naturalized Canadian citizen in 1961. Helmholtz–Kohlrausch Effect
The Helmholtz–Kohlrausch effect (named after Hermann von Helmholtz and V. A. Kohlrausch) is a perceptual phenomenon wherein the intense saturation of spectral hue is perceived as part of the color's luminance. This brightness increase by saturation, which grows stronger as saturation increases, might better be called chromatic luminance, since "white" or achromatic luminance is the standard of comparison. It appears in both self-luminous and surface colors, although it is most pronounced in spectral (monochromatic) colors. MacAdam Ellipse
In the study of color vision, a MacAdam ellipse is roughly a region on a chromaticity diagram which contains all colors which are indistinguishable to the average human eye, from the color at the center of the ellipse. Specifically, it is the standard deviation of a number of experimental color matches to the central color. Assuming a Multivariate normal distribution, bivariate normal distribution of these match points, a MacAdam ellipse thus contains about 39% of the color match points. A 2X MacAdam ellipse will contain about 86% of the match points, and a 3X MacAdam ellipse will contain about 99% of the match points. David MacAdam
David Lewis MacAdam (July 1, 1910 – March 9, 1998) was an American physicist and color scientist who made important contributions to color science and technology in the fields of colorimetry, color discrimination, color photography and television, and color order. Education MacAdam grew up in Upper Darby Township, Pennsylvania, where he graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1928. He attended Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. In 1936, he received a PhD in physics from MIT. Under Prof. Arthur C. Hardy, he originated the first course in color measurement and assisted Hardy in the preparation of “Handbook of Colorimetry,” published in 1936. Career Upon graduation MacAdam joined the Research Laboratories of the Eastman Kodak company in Rochester, New York. He retired from the company in 1975.
