Guido Calza
Guido Calza (21 April 1888 – 17 April 1946 in Rome, Italy), born in Milan, Italy, was an Italian archaeologist whose work included excavations in Rome and at the port city of Ostia. Calza served as inspector of the Ostia excavations and as the director of excavations in the Forum Romanum and the Palatine Hill in Rome. He also oversaw the excavation of the Isola Sacra Necropolis The Isola Sacra Necropolis or Necropolis of Portus in the Isola Sacra was the first large-scale pagan cemetery of Roman Imperial times to be excavated. Ostia Antica (archaeological Site)
Ostia Antica () is an ancient Roman city and the port of History of Rome, Rome located at the mouth of the Tiber. It is near modern Ostia (Rome), Ostia, southwest of Rome. Due to siltation, silting and the invasion of sand, the site now lies from the sea. The name ''Ostia'' (the plural of ''ostium'') derives from Latin ''os'' 'mouth'. Palatine Hill
The Palatine Hill (; Classical Latin: ''Palatium''; Neo-Latin: ''Collis/Mons Palatinus''; ), which relative to the seven hills of Rome is the centremost, is one of the most ancient parts of the city; it has been called "the first nucleus of the Roman Empire". Isola Sacra Necropolis
The Isola Sacra Necropolis or Necropolis of Portus in the Isola Sacra was the first large-scale pagan cemetery of Roman Imperial times to be excavated. The excavator-in-chief of most of Isola Sacra was Guido Calza. The necropolis was found on the manmade island of Isola Sacra, which lies between the cities of Portus and Ostia Antica, a region just south of Rome. The emperor Trajan was in power when this artificial island was created. Herbert Bloch
Herbert Bloch (18 August 1911 – 6 September 2006) was a professor of Classics at Harvard and a renowned authority on Greek historiography, Roman epigraphy and archaeology, medieval monasticism, and the transmission of classical culture and literature. Life A Jewish native of Germany, Bloch studied Ancient History, Classical Philology and Archaeology at the University of Berlin and at the University of Rome, where he received his Dr. degree in Roman History in 1935 and the Diploma di perfezionamento in 1937. He was awarded a L.L.D. by the University of Cassino in 1989. He was a member of the staff of the excavations in Ostia in 1938. Because of anti-Semitic legislation in Italy at this time, Bloch emigrated to the United States in 1939. His brother, who stayed in Germany, was murdered in the Holocaust.
