Greg Welch
Gregory John Welch (born in 1964 in Campsie, Sydney), known as Greg Welch, is an Australian triathlete. He is known for having won "The Grand Slam", which includes the ITU Triathlon World Championships (1990), The Ironman World Championship (1994), the ITU Duathlon World Championships (1993) and the Long Course Triathlon World Championship (1994). Greg was an ambassador to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in 2000. Due to his being diagnosed with ventricular tachycardia, he has undergone nine open-heart surgeries from 2001 until 2003 and has retired from sports. Sian Welch is an American former triathlete. Career She has been married since 1993 to former Australian professional triathlete Greg Welch. In 1994, she won the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon in San Francisco. In November 1996, she came in third in at the Cross Triathlon World Cup in Hawaii. In 1997, she became national triathlon champion on the short distance. In 2000, she ended her pro career—three months after her husband Greg announced his retirement. Ironman Hawaii 1997 In October 1997, she and her compatriot Wendy Ingraham delivered a thrilling duel for fourth place on the final stretch of the Ironman Hawaii, as the two were dehydrated and exhausted overturned and could only crawl to the finish on all fours. The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) is a sports event promotion company owned by conglomerate Advance Publications, that produces the Ironman Triathlon, Ironman 70.3, the 5150 series of triathlon races, and other sports events. History In December, 1989, Dr. James P. Gills and David Voth acquired and purchased the Hawaii Triathlon Corporation, owner of the Ironman Brand, for $3 million from Valerie Silk. Voth was the CEO from 1989 to 1993 followed by David Yates then Lew Friedland in the CEO role. With the Ironman brand, Gills and Voth established the World Triathlon Corporation with the intention of furthering the sport of triathlon and building a multi media and global brand presence.
