Great Walton Railroad
The Great Walton Railroad is a class III railroad that operates of track in Georgia, United States. In addition to its own line between Monroe and Social Circle, Georgia, the railroad operates the Athens Line, LLC and the Hartwell Railroad. Clay, feldspar, grain, machinery, fertilizer, woodchips, plastics, pulpwood, and silica are carried by the railroad, generating around 3,650 annual carloads. History The railroad between Social Circle and Monroe was originally constructed by the Walton Railroad beginning in 1880. In March 1884 the railroad was consolidated with the Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern Railroad and later leased to the Georgia Railroad. Following acquisition by the Georgia Railroad the line continued to operate as a separate division, the Monroe Railroad, until 1917. Seaboard System Railroad
The Seaboard System Railroad, Inc. was a US Class I railroad that operated from 1982 to 1986. Since the late 1960s, Seaboard Coast Line Industries had operated the Seaboard Coast Line and its sister railroads—notably the Louisville & Nashville and Clinchfield—as the "Family Lines System". In 1980, SCLI merged with the Chessie System to create the holding company CSX Corporation; two years later, CSX merged the Family Lines railroads to create the Seaboard System Railroad. In 1986, Seaboard renamed itself CSX Transportation, which absorbed the Chessie System's two major railroads the following year. Thoroughbred Shortline Program
The Thoroughbred Shortline Program was a system of shortline creation devised by Norfolk Southern in the late 1980s. It involved an alternative to the typical practice of a Class I railroad selling rail lines outright to shortlines in the post- Staggers Act era. Defining features of the program included leasing lines to shortline operators, as opposed to outright sales, keeping stations available in Norfolk Southern marketing campaigns, and crediting carloads delivered to Norfolk Southern towards the lease and eventual purchase of the line. The program ran from 1988 to 1991, creating more than a dozen new shortline railroads, nearly all of which are still in operation today. Shady Dale is a town in Jasper County, Georgia, United States. The population was 249 at the 2010 census. History Shady Dale was founded ''ca.'' 1880 on the site of a former Creek Indian settlement. The name "Shady Dale" was descriptively applied. The Georgia General Assembly incorporated Shady Dale as a town in 1889. Social Circle is a city in southern Walton County, extending into Newton County, in the U.S. state of Georgia, 45 miles east of Atlanta. History It is unclear why the name "Social Circle" was applied to this place. Gainesville, Jefferson And Southern Railroad
The Gainesville, Jefferson and Southern Railroad was a narrow gauge railroad in the U.S. state of Georgia. It was chartered in 1872 and upon completion March 11, 1884, consisted of two lines from Gainesville to Jefferson and Social Circle, splitting at Belmont. Its first president was Colonel Ira Yale Sage. The portion between Monroe and Social Circle had been acquired and converted that same day from the broad gauge Walton Railroad. Bankruptcy forced the railroad into receivership in 1897, and in 1904, most of the track was sold at foreclosure to the newly formed Gainesville Midland Railway, while the old Walton Railroad became the Monroe Railroad, a subsidiary of the Georgia Railroad. The Gainesville Midland extended the tracks from Jefferson to Athens, and was eventually acquired by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad in 1959.
