Great Lakes Transmission
Great Lakes Transmission is a natural gas pipeline that brings gas from western Canada through Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan before re-entering Canada. Along the way it provides gas to ANR Pipeline. Its FERC code is 51. The pipeline was opened in 1967, running between Emerson, Manitoba and St. Clair, Michigan. The system has 14 compressor stations capable of transporting up to per day. The pipeline is operated by Great Lakes Gas Transmission L.P., headquartered in Houston, TX. Natural gas (also called fossil gas or simply gas) is a naturally occurring mixture of gaseous hydrocarbons consisting primarily of methane in addition to various smaller amounts of other higher alkanes. Low levels of trace gases like carbon dioxide, nitrogen, hydrogen sulfide, and helium are also usually present. Natural gas is colorless and odorless, so odorizers such as mercaptan (which smells like sulfur or rotten eggs) are commonly added to natural gas supplies for safety so that leaks can be readily detected. ANR Pipeline
ANR Pipeline delivers gas from Texas, the Oklahoma panhandle region, and Louisiana to the Midwest and Great Lakes region. It has two legs, one from Texas and the other from Louisiana, which meet near Chicago. History ANR was founded as the Michigan-Wisconsin Pipe Line Company on July 25, 1945. In 1947, the company received federal approval to build a $52 million, 1,800-mile-long pipeline from Texas to the Detroit-Ann Arbor area and to sections of Wisconsin, Missouri and Iowa. Emerson is an unincorporated community recognized as a local urban district in south central Manitoba, Canada, located within the Municipality of Emerson – Franklin.
