Good Shepherd Convent, Colombo
__NOTOC__ Good Shepherd Convent is a semi-government Catholic girls' school and the first Catholic convent in Sri Lanka. Located in the neighbourhood of Kotahena, the convent school educates girls from Kindergarten to age 19. The convent includes an auditorium, libraries, ICT and Science laboratories, Basketball and Netball Courts, and gyms. Other works of Sisters of The Good Shepherd in Sri Lanka The Good Shepherd congregation marked the beginning of the sisters' mission to British Ceylon and the Far East. Nuns from this original convent opened Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy, St Mary's School in Pettah (closed) and St Bridget's Convent in Cinnamon Gardens. Kotahena is a suburb part of Colombo, Sri Lanka. St Bridget's Convent, Colombo
St. Bridget's Convent is a private girls' school in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was founded on 1 February 1902 by the Sisters of the Good Shepherd order, making it one of the earliest Irish mission schools of the Roman Catholic Church in Ceylon. The school today consists of a Montessori school, a primary school and a collegiate school. The school is a non-fee levying school, whereby it relies mostly on state funds. School buildings includes an auditorium. History On 1 February 1902, at the request of T. A. Melizan, Archbishop of Colombo, St. Bridget's Convent was established as the second house of the Good Shepherd congregation for the education of young ladies. It was the third school in the Colombo area opened by the nuns. Leonie Kotelawala
Leonie Ayuntha Weerasinghe ( si, ලියෝනි කොතලාවල; 18 September 1944 – 19 June 2022), popularly as Leonie Kotelawala, was an actress in Sri Lankan cinema, theatre and television. In a career spanned more than seven decades, Kotelawala is best known for becoming the first Sri Lankan stage actress to win the 1962 Best Actress Award for her performance in the play ''Mehew Lokaya''. Early life She was born on 18 September 1944 in Colombo, British Ceylon. She studied at Good Shepherd Convent, Colombo. Leonie was married to Tissa Kotelawala who was a photographer and later changed her name from Weerasinghe to Leonie Kotelawala. Tissa died in 1999. She had four sons, all of whom lived abroad. She spent most of her time with her grandchildren. According to her son, she had been ill for some time. She died at home in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 19 June 2022 at the age of 78. Tehani Egodawela (born 19 April 1986), also known as M. G. T. U. E. Egodawela, or Udeshika Egodawela is a Sri Lankan sports shooter and a current national record holder in shooting. She competed at the postponed 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Naval career Having completed her secondary education at the Good Shepherd Convent, Colombo, she enlisted in the Sri Lanka Navy as a seaman recruit in 2011 and specialized in communicator trade. Straits Settlements
The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories located in Southeast Asia. Headquartered in Singapore for more than a century, it was originally established in 1826 as part of the territories controlled by the British East India Company, the Straits Settlements came under British Raj control in 1858 and then under direct British control as a Crown colony on 1 April 1867. In 1946, following the end of the Second World War and the Japanese occupation, the colony was dissolved as part of Britain's reorganisation of its Southeast Asian dependencies in the area. Cinnamon Gardens ( si, කුරුඳු වත්ත ''Kurundu Vaththa'', ta, கறுவாத் தோட்டம்) is an affluent neighbourhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka located 3 kilometers south-east from Colombo's centre. Cinnamon Gardens is named from the former cinnamon plantation in this area. In the year 1789, there were of cinnamon trees in the gardens. Pettah, Colombo
Pettah is a neighbourhood in Colombo, Sri Lanka located east of the city centre Fort, and behind the Colombo Port. The Pettah neighborhood is famous for the Pettah Market, a series of open air bazaars and markets. It is one of Sri Lanka's busiest commercial areas, where a huge number of wholesale and retail shops, buildings, commercial institutions and other organisations are located. The main market segment is designed like a gigantic crossword puzzle, where one may traverse through the entire markets from dawn till dusk, but not completely cover every part of it.
