Gondal State Railway
The Gondal State Railway (GSR) was a metre gauge railway owned by the Gondal State. History The line opened in 1881 and originally worked by the Bhavnagar–Gondal–Junagad–Porbandar Railway. From 1911, the line formed the nucleus of a new system, working jointly with the Porbandar State Railway (PSR) thus forming the Gondal–Porbandar Railway. In 1919, GSR took over the sole working of the PSR. Khijadiya–Dhari Railway opened in 1913 was a metre gauge railway, part of GSR and owned by the State of Gondal. In 1948, GSR became a part of Saurashtra Railway. Personnel No staff lists have ever been found. Gondal State is one of the eight first class princely states of Kathiawar Agency, Bombay Presidency in India. the capital of the state is Gondal town. Porbandar State Railway
Porbandar State Railway was a metre gauge in the Porbandar State in Gujarat during the 19th century. History The Porbandar State Railway was owned by the State of Porbandar, which was then ruled by Vikramatji Khimojiraj. Later railways were further developed by Bhavsinhji Madhavsinhji and Natwarsinhji Bhavsinhji under their rules. It worked initially with Bhavnagar–Gondal–Junagad–Porbandar Railway until 1911. It was opened to traffic in 1888. Later, from 1919, it worked with Gondal Railway. The Porbandar rail line was extended to Jamjodhpur in 1922, at which time the line was 42 miles long. Saurashtra Railway
Saurashtra Railway came into being in April, 1948 with the amalgamation of state railways like Bhavnagar State Railway, Gondal Railway, Porbandar Railway, Jamnagar & Dwarka Railway, Morvi Railway, Dhrangadhra Railway, Okhamandal State Railway, Junagadh State Railway, Baria State Railway, Rajpipla Railway etc. Upon the independence of India and the merger of various princely states into the Union of India, it became necessary to merge various state railways owned by these princely states into one. As the various states of Saurashtra and Kathiawar were merged to make Saurashtra State, the Government of India, similarly merged the various state railways of Gujarat into a separate entity called Saurashtra Railway. Saurashtra (region)
Saurashtra, also known as Sorath or Kathiawar, is a peninsular region of Gujarat, India, located on the Arabian Sea coast. It covers about a third of Gujarat state, notably 11 districts of Gujarat, including Rajkot District. It was formerly a state of India before it merged with Bombay state. In 1961 it separated from Bombay and joined Gujarat. Location Saurashtra peninsula is bound on the south and south-west by the Arabian sea, on the north-west by the Gulf of Kutch and on the east by the Gulf of Khambhat.
