Golden Rose Synagogue (Dnipro)
The Golden Rose Synagogue () is an Orthodox Jewish synagogue, located on Kotsyubinskiy Street/Sholom Aleichem Street, in Dnipro, Ukraine. History The Golden Rose synagogue was built in 1868 (when Dnipro was named Yekaterinoslav). In 1924 the building was used as a workers' club and a warehouse and above the portice a seal of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was located in place of the Magen David. In 1996 the building was returned to the Jewish community. In 1999 the reconstruction began, following the design by a local Jewish architect, A. Dolnik. Frank Meisler, an Israeli artist, designed the foyer, the prayer hall and the Holy Ark. Above the sanctuary entrance is a representation of golden roses, made by Meisler. A small rotunda between the lobby and sanctuary is decorated with the first line of the Sh’ma Israel prayer. Orthodox Judaism is a collective term for the traditionalist branches of contemporary Judaism. A Torah ark (also known as the ''hekhal'', , or ''aron qodesh'', ) is an ornamental chamber in the synagogue that houses the Torah scrolls. History The ark is also known as the ''ark of law'', or in Hebrew the ''Aron Kodesh'' () or ''aron ha-Kodesh'' ('holy ark') in Ashkenazi communities and as the '' Hekhal'' ('sanctuary') among Sefardi communities. The name ''Aron Kodesh'' is a reference to the Ark of the Covenant, which was stored in the Holy of Holies in the inner sanctuaries of both the ancient Tabernacle and the Temple in Jerusalem. Shmuel Kaminetsky (born 1965) is an Israel-born rabbi and has been the rabbi of Dnipro and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast since 1990. Biography Shmuel Kaminetsky's parents emigrated from the USSR to Israel due to Soviet religious persecution in 1946. Kaminetsky was born in Kfar Chabad, Israel, in 1965. From 1978 to 1981 he studied at the yeshiva of the city of Lod. In 1981 he went to the United States where he graduated from the Lubavitcher hassidic Rabbinical College of America The Rabbinical College of America is a Chabad Lubavitch Chasidic yeshiva in Morristown, New Jersey. Menorah Center (Dnipro)
The Menorah Center () is a center of the Jewish community in Dnipro in the South-Eastern Ukraine. Some sources declare it to be the biggest multifunctional Jewish community center in Europe or in the world. The heart of the complex is the historic Golden Rose central synagogue, built in the 19th century. Conception The idea to create the Menorah Center, as one of the biggest such centers in the world, was proposed by Rabbi Shmuel Kaminetsky and funded by the President of the Dnipropetrovsk Jewish community Gennadiy Bogolyubov and the President of the United Jewish Community of Ukraine (also the founder of European Jewish Union) Ihor Kolomoyskyi.
