Gogyōka
Gogyohka () is a five-line, untitled, Japanese poetic form. Unlike tanka (57577 syllables), Gogyohka has no restrictions on line length. Poets such as Kenji Miyazawa, Jun Ishiwara, Yūgure Maeda, Hakushu Kitahara, Toson Yashiro and Shinobu Orikuchi have written five-line poetry as free-style tankas since the Taishō period around the 1910s. However, they did not name the form. In 1983, Enta Kusakabe named it Gogyohka () and for the first time laid out the five rules of five-line poetry. He trademarked Gogyohka in Japan. The form of English Gogyohka is the same as that of free English tanka because both are untitled and are written in five free lines. As of 2018, at least five Gogyohka magazines existed: ''Gogyohka'', ''Hamakaze'', ''Minami no kaze'', ''Sai'' and ''Kojimachi club''. Tanka
is a genre of classical Japanese poetry and one of the major genres of Japanese literature. Etymology Originally, in the time of the ''Man'yōshū'' (latter half of the eighth century AD), the term ''tanka'' was used to distinguish "short poems" from the longer . In the ninth and tenth centuries, however, notably with the compilation of the '' Kokinshū'', the short poem became the dominant form of poetry in Japan, and the originally general word ''waka'' became the standard name for this form. Kenji Miyazawa
was a Japanese novelist and poet of children's literature from Hanamaki, Iwate, in the late Taishō and early Shōwa periods. Jun Ishiwara
Jun Ishiwara or Atsushi Ishihara (石原 純; January 15, 1881 – January 19, 1947) was a Japanese theoretical physicist, known for his works on the electronic theory of metals, the theory of relativity and quantum theory. Being the only Japanese scientist who made an original contribution to the old quantum theory, in 1915, independently of other scientists, he formulated quantization rules for systems with several degrees of freedom. Yūgure Maeda
Yūgure Maeda (前田 夕暮 ''Maeda Yūgure''; 1883–1951) was a Japanese ''tanka'' poet. Biography Yūgure Maeda was born on 27 July 1883. He was born in Minamiyana Village, Ōsumi District (modern-day Hadano City), Kanagawa Prefecture. His real name was Yōzō Maeda (前田 洋造 ''Maeda Yōzō''). He dropped out of middle school without graduating. In 1904 he moved to Tokyo and became a student of the ''tanka'' poet Saishū Onoe. He was noted as a representative poet of naturalism along with Bokusui Wakayama. He painted an era called the "Yugure / Bokusui era" in the history of literature. He founded Hakujitsu and published the tanka magazine "Poetry" every month. Shinobu Orikuchi
, also known as , was a Japanese ethnologist, linguist, folklorist, novelist, and poet. As a disciple of Kunio Yanagita, he established an original academic field named , which is a mixture of Japanese folklore, Japanese classics, and Shintō. He produced many works in a diversity of fields covering the history of literature, folkloric performing arts, folklore itself, Japanese language, the classics study, Shintōology, ancient study, and so on. Cinquain
Cinquain is a class of poetic forms that employ a 5-line pattern. Earlier used to describe any five-line form, it now refers to one of several forms that are defined by specific rules and guidelines. American cinquain The modern form, known as American cinquain inspired by Japanese haiku and tanka, is akin in spirit to that of the Imagists. Limerick (poetry)
A limerick ( ) is a form of verse, usually humorous and frequently rude, in five-line, predominantly trimeter with a strict rhyme scheme of AABBA, in which the first, second and fifth line rhyme, while the third and fourth lines are shorter and share a different rhyme. Waka (poetry)
is a type of poetry in classical Japanese literature. Although ''waka'' in modern Japanese is written as , in the past it was also written as (see Wa, an old name for Japan), and a variant name is .
