Glyfada (, ) is a town and a suburb in the South Athens regional unit located in the Athens Riviera along the coast of Saronic Gulf. It is situated in the southern parts of the Athens#Athens Urban Area, Athens urban area. The area stretches from the foot of the Hymettus mountain to the Saronic Gulf. History In ancient times, the area was a deme known as Aixone (). Today, Glyfada is packed with some of the capital's best-known nightclubs, upscale restaurants and shops. It could be argued to be one of the most "Americanization, Americanized" of Athenian municipalities, since an American airbase was located nearby until the early 1990s. The base's population contributed in part to Glyfada's character, leading to a unique blend of Greek and American atmosphere and cuisine. National Athletic Center Glyfada Makis Liougas, commonly known as Glyfada Indoor Hall (Greek: Εθνικό Αθλητικό Κέντρου Γλυφάδας Ματθαίος Λιούγκας) is an indoor arena that is located in Glyfada, Athens, Greece. The Athletic Nautical Club of Glyfada , or "ANOG" (Greek: Αθλητικός Ναυτικός Όμιλος Γλυφάδας, "ΑΝΟΓ") was founded by 20 local sportsmen in 1946 and is located in Glyfada, Athens. The first name of the club was ''Athletic Club of Glyfada'' (AOG), (Αθλητικός Όμιλος Γλυφάδας) and the departments was basketball, volleyball, swimming, track and field and last water Polo. The Athens Metro () is a rapid transit system serving the Athens urban area in Greece. Line 1 opened as a single-track conventional steam railway in 1869 and was electrified in 1904. Beginning in 1991, Elliniko Metro S.A. constructed and extended Lines 2 and 3. Elliniko Metro Station
Elliniko () is the current southern terminus on Athens Metro Line 2 since the Elliniko extension opened on 26 July 2013. With the opening of the station, travel time from Elliniko to Syntagma Square was reduced from 45 minutes (by car) to 20 minutes. Location The station is adjacent to Vouliagmenis Avenue, at its section north of the closed Ellinikon International Airport. It has two exits to the ground level, one on each side of Vouliagmenis Avenue, with the southern exit to have a metallic oval shaped roof, as well as a square. Poseidonos Avenue
Poseidonos Avenue (), also known as Paraliaki (), is the main coastal road of the Athens agglomeration, Greece. It runs from new Faliro in Piraeus to Glyfada and beyond, traversing all the coastaline of Athens; thus it is the major highway in the southern part of the Greek capital and one of the largest in the Athens urban area. The road is notable for having some of the stadiums that were used in the 2004 Athens Olympics, going through the major Olympic complexes of Faliro and Hellinikon. Several Greek films were shot on the road, particularly between the 1950s and the 1980s, along with television shows since the 1980s. The road turns into GR-91 after Glyfada, a dangerous road due to the street racing culture. Ellinikon International Airport
Ellinikon International Airport , sometimes spelled ''Hellinikon'', was an international airport that served Athens, Greece, for 63 years. Following its closure on 28 March 2001, it was replaced by the new Athens International Airport, Athens International Airport ''Eleftherios Venizelos''. The airport was located south of Athens, and just west of Glyfada. It was named after the village of Elliniko, now a suburb of Athens. The airport had an official capacity of 11 million passengers per year, but served 13.5 million passengers during its last year of operations. Vouliagmenis Avenue
Vouliagmenis Avenue () is one of the longest avenues in the Greater Athens area, stretching from central Athens to the seaside resort of Vouliagmeni. The total length is 21 km. The avenue begins at Athanasios Diakos Street and Michalakopoulou Street and the southbound portion of the avenue runs with three lanes to the southern portion of municipality of Athens and eastern Dafni.
