Glanaman
Glanamman ( cy, Glanaman) is a Welsh mining village in the valley of the River Amman in Carmarthenshire. Glanamman has long been a stronghold of the Welsh language; village life is largely conducted in Welsh. Like the neighbouring village of Garnant it experienced a coal-mining boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the last big colliery closed in 1947 and coal has been extracted fitfully since then. History The location of Garnant and Glanamman was known as Cwmamman ("Amman valley") before coal was discovered; until the 18th century it was a remote wilderness with just a few farms and rough mountain roads. Mining appears to have started at Brynlloi in 1757 and small coal workings proliferated in the first half of the 19th century. The arrival of the railway in 1840 meant that coal could be exported on an industrial scale through Llanelli docks, and the construction of two stations at Glanamman and Garnant promoted a distinction between the two communities. Defiance Cycle Company
The Defiance Cycle Company was formed in 1880 to produce bicycles in Wales. It was founded by two brothers of the Williams family, Arthur and William Williams who established the factory at the top of the Amman Valley. They started making ordinary bicycles in 1878, and made their first chain-driven bicycle in late 1884 or 1885. On Easter Monday, 9 April 1885, a chain-driven Defiance Cycle was ridden from the factory at Glanamman to Swansea and back, a distance of some 35 miles. Many people turned out to see this event, which is commemorated by riders tracing the ride route to Swansea. The company thrived through the 1880s and in 1895 opened a retail premises in Eloff Street, Johannesburg, South Africa. to sell bicycles exported from Wales. Garnant
Garnant is a Welsh mining village in the valley of the River Amman in Carmarthenshire, north of Swansea. Like the neighbouring village of Glanamman it experienced a coal-mining boom in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but the last big colliery closed in 1936 and coal has been extracted fitfully since then. The village has the only Commissioners' church built in southwest Wales, traditionally a Methodist region. Glanamman (electoral Ward)
Glanamman is the name of an electoral ward for Carmarthenshire County Council, in the Amman Valley, Carmarthenshire, Wales. It is represented by one county councillor. Description The Glanamman county ward covers the Cwmamman community wards of Grenig and Tircoed, which include the areas north and south of the village of Glanamman. The eastern half of Cwmamman is covered by the Garnant ward. The population of Glanamman ward at the 2011 census was 2,347. A 2019 boundary review by the Local Government Boundary Commission for Wales recommended ward boundaries remain the same, but the name of the ward be changed from Glanamman to Glanaman, the standard Welsh spelling. Amman Valley Railway
The Amman Valley Railway Society ( cy, Rheilffordd Dyffryn Aman) is situated near the former Gwaun Cae Gurwen branch line, that runs alongside the River Amman, some north of Swansea in west Wales. Its primary focus is to construct Swansea 9 Lines, an eco-friendly tram system to the heart of Swansea and the surrounding areas. The project was originally based on a heritage railway proposal on a lines that formerly served the various collieries of the area north of Swansea and Llanelli. In 2014 the Abernant Branch line had been cleared, along with a station platform, track beds and unearthed railway lines, all of which were being restored. Abernant Colliery
Abernant Colliery was a coal mine in the River Amman valley at Pwllfawatkin, north of Pontardawe and north of Swansea, West Wales. Development Abernant was developed by the National Coal Board as one of the West Wales "super pits" alongside Cynheidre Colliery in the Gwendraeth valley, an investment intend to keep economic coal mining a viable industry in the area. Llanelly Railway
The Llanelly Railway and Dock Company was an early Welsh railway system. It opened its first short line and a wet dock at Llanelly in 1834, and soon went on to build a longer line from Llanelly to serve pits in the Amman Valley, and then on to Llandilo, reached in 1857. The Llanelly company leased and worked the Vale of Towy Railway on to Llandovery, from 1858. Responding to competitive pressure the company obtained authorisation to connect its network to Swansea and Carmarthen, but the failure of a contractor put the company into financial difficulty, and a financial reconstruction later led to the Swansea and Carmarthen lines passing to the London and North Western Railway, while the original core system was taken over by the Great Western Railway.
