Richard Andrew Gephardt (; born January 31, 1941) is an American attorney, lobbyist, and politician who served as a United States Representative from Missouri from 1977 to 2005. A member of the Democratic Party, he was House Majority Leader from 1989 to 1995 and Minority Leader from 1995 to 2003. He ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States in 1988 and 2004. Gephardt was mentioned as a possible vice presidential nominee in 1988, 1992, 2000, 2004, and 2008. Since his retirement from politics, Gephardt has become a significant lobbyist. He founded a Washington-based public affairs firm, Gephardt Government Affairs, an Atlanta-based labor consultancy, the Gephardt Group, as well as a direct primary care group, SolidaritUS Health. Christine Leigh Gephardt is an American LGBT rights activist and former social worker who campaigned for her father Dick Gephardt during the 2004 U.S. presidential election. She is the first prominent LGBT relative to promote a major political campaign in the United States. Biography Gephardt worked on her father's political campaigns as a child in St. Louis, Missouri. She later became a social worker after graduating from Northwestern University. In her practice as a social worker, she helped abused and mentally ill women in Washington, D.C. She married Marc Alan Leibole in 1997, a man she later called "my best friend", according to the ''Los Angeles Times.''
