George J. Gaskin
George Jefferson Gaskin (February 16, 1863 – December 14, 1920) was a Northern Irish-born American recording artist, being one of the most popular singers in the United States during the 1890s. Biography Gaskin was born in Belfast, Ireland, but migrated to the United States in his youth. According to US Naturalization records, Gaskin arrived in New York City in June 1880 but did not attain citizenship until October 18, 1892. At that time he gave his address as 109 East 102nd Street. Gaskin's earliest known recordings were done for the Edison North American Phonograph Company on June 2, 1891. He may have been only the second vocalist to make commercial records for Edison (the first may have been African American whistler and singer George W. Johnson, recorded just one day earlier, on June 1). He was nicknamed the "Silver-voiced Irish tenor", and specialized in sentimental Irish ballads and the popular songs of tin pan alley. "A Hot Time in the Old Town", also titled as "There'll Be a Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight", is an American popular music, American popular song, copyrighted and perhaps composed in 1896 by Theodore August Metz with lyrics by Joe Hayden. Metz was the band leader of the James McIntyre (theatrical actor), McIntyre and Heath Minstrels. Origins One history of the song reports: "While on tour with the McIntyre and Heath Minstrels, their train arrived at a place called 'Old Town'. From their train window, [Metz] could see a group of children starting a fire, near the tracks. One of the other minstrels remarked that 'there'll be a hot time in the old town tonight'. Metz noted the remark on a scrap of paper, intending to write a march with that motif. He did indeed write the march the very next day. The Discography of American Historical Recordings (DAHR) is a database catalog of master recordings made by American record companies during the 78rpm era. The 78rpm era was the time period in which any flat disc records were being played at a speed of 78 revolutions per minute. The DAHR provides some of these original recordings, free of charge, via audio streaming, along with access to the production catalogs of those same companies. DAHR is part of the American Discography Project (ADP), and is funded and operated in partnership by the University of California, Santa Barbara, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Packard Humanities Institute. "Old Folks at Home" (also known as " Swanee River") is a folk song written by Stephen Foster in 1851. Since 1935, it has been the official state song of Florida, although in 2008 the original lyrics were revised. It is Roud Folk Song Index no. 13880. Composition "Old Folks at Home" was commissioned in 1851 by E. P. Christy for use by Christy's Minstrels, his minstrel troupe. Christy also asked to be credited as the song's creator, and was so credited on early sheet music printings. As a result, while the song was a success, Foster did not directly profit much from it, though he continued to receive royalties for the song. Foster had composed most of the lyrics but was struggling to name the river of the opening line, and asked his brother, Morrison, to suggest one. "My Old New Hampshire Home" is an 1898 song that was the first popular hit of composer Harry Von Tilzer, with lyrics by Andrew B. Sterling. In 1898, Von Tilzer and Sterling were sharing a rented furnished room in New York City on Fifteenth Street. They were three weeks behind on their rent, and used a final rent bill slipped under their door to write the lyrics to a new song. The following day they shopped it to places on Union Square with no luck. Bartley Costello, who was a lyricist himself, told them to take it to new publisher William C. Dunn. They brought it to Dunn, who agreed to take it home for his daughter to play and to pay $15 for it if she liked it.
