Gas (musician)
Gas (stylized as GAS or G A S) is the main musical project of German electronic music, electronic musician and composer Wolfgang Voigt (born 1961). The project was created as an expressive medium inspired by his experiences with taking LSD in the :de:Königsforst, Königsforst, a German forest situated near his hometown of Cologne, for long periods in his youth. He has claimed that the intention of the project is to "bring the forest to the disco, or vice-versa". History Wolfgang Voigt began creating music under the name of Gas starting in 1995, when he released the EP ''Modern'' on the label Profan. However, he has regarded individual pieces created from 1989 onward as being part of the Gas project, marked by a compiled 2008 release under his real name. Wolfgang Voigt
Wolfgang Voigt (born 1961) is a German electronic music DJ and producer from Cologne, known for his output under various aliases, such as Gas. He signed on numerous record labels, including Warp, Harvest, Raster-Noton, Force Inc, Astral Industries and Kompakt. The latter was co-founded by Voigt alongside Michael Mayer and Jürgen Paape. He is considered one of the most influential minimal techno artists. Life and career Together with his brother Reinhard Voigt (alias ''Sweet Reinhard'', ''Kron'' and ''Pentax''), Wolfgang Voigt is considered one of the founders and most influential artists of the minimal techno scene. ''Pop'' is the fourth album by German producer Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, released in March 2000 by Mille Plateaux. Influenced by LSD experiences in a German forest and wanting to create a "pop sound" for his subculture of German techno, Voigt's music as Gas is characterized by looping layered orchestral samples over a bass drum, with his early work having somber atmosphere. ''Pop'' departs from this ambient techno sound in favor of ambient music that utilizes brighter musical elements with an emphasis on texture. Four-on-the-floor (or four-to-the-floor) is a rhythm used primarily in dance genres such as disco and electronic dance music. ''Narkopop'' is the fifth studio album by Wolfgang Voigt's Gas project, the first album under the moniker in 17 years and his first on Kompakt. The album was released on 21 April 2017. Reception On the review aggregate site Metacritic, ''Narkopop'' has a score of 86 out of 100, indicating "universal acclaim", based on 14 reviews. Paul Simpson at AllMusic calls it an "evolution and refinement" of the Gas sound. Mark Richardson from ''Pitchfork'' complimented its "deeper, richer, and more luxurious sound" compared to prior Gas releases. ''Box'' is the second boxed set released by Wolfgang Voigt under his Gas alias. The album collects the compact disc versions of '' Zauberberg'', '' Königsforst '', ''Pop'' and '' Oktember''. The album marked Voigt's return to the Gas project, with a new album, '' Narkopop'', seeing release the year after ''Box''. The boxed set consisted of 10 vinyl records (3 per album, 1 for ''Oktember'') as well as 4 compact discs and an art book. ''Box'' contains some differences between its contents and the previously issued versions of each album. Apart from overall remastering of the music, several songs appear in slightly longer versions. Notably, the A1 and D1 songs exclusive to the vinyl version of ''Königsforst'' were appended to the end of that disc, marking their first digital appearance.
