Gandhara (song)
is a song by Japanese rock band Godiego, serving as their 7th single. Referring to the historical Buddhist land on the Indian subcontinent, "Gandhara" was used as the ending theme song for the first season of the television drama , known in the English speaking world as ''Monkey''. "Gandhara" was originally released in Japan on October 1, 1978, but it was later released in the United Kingdom in 1980 to coincide with the British broadcast of ''Monkey''. "Gandhara" reached number 2 on both the Oricon and ''The Best Ten'' charts in Japan, while the British release reached 56 on the UK Singles Chart. Godiego recorded the song in both Japanese and English, with a hybrid Japanese & English version being included on the releases in the UK. The entirely English version appears on the album '' Magic Monkey'' in Japan. Gandhara reached #56 on the British pop charts and stayed in its top 100 for seven weeks in 1980. The band released its first self-titled album in 1976, with Takami's brother, Ryōji Asano, replacing Harada as drummer. By 1977, Ryōji left and was replaced by American drummer Tommy Snyder. They are perhaps best known for performing the song " Monkey Magic" for the 1978 television series ''Saiyūki'' which was brought over to the United Kingdom as ''Monkey''. This led to several releases through BBC Records, including "Monkey Magic", "Gandhara", and the LP '' Magic Monkey'' and several of their records charted in the UK. Monkey is a common name that may refer to most mammals of the infraorder Simiiformes, also known as simians. Monkey Majik (stylised as MONKEY MAJIK) is a Japanese pop rock band formed in 2000 in Sendai, Japan. The band consists of Canadian brothers, Maynard Plant and Blaise Plant, each acting as lead vocalists and guitarists, and two Japanese members: Tax on drums, and Dick on bass.
