The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is a conservation authority in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was established in October 1946 via the Conservation Authorities Act, and is a member authority of Conservation Ontario. The authority is responsible for the management and protection of the Ganaraska River watershed in Northumberland County and the Regional Municipality of Durham in Southern Ontario. Conservation Authority (Ontario, Canada)
A conservation authority is a local, community-based natural resource management agency based in Ontario, Canada. Conservation authorities represent groupings of municipalities on a drainage basin, watershed basis and work in partnership with other agencies to carry out natural resource management activities within their respective watersheds, on behalf of their member municipalities and the Province of Ontario. The 1946 ''Conservation Authorities Act'' provides the means by which municipalities within a common Drainage basin, watershed can petition the Province of Ontario to form a conservation authority for that watershed to undertake programs of natural resource management. Conservation Authorities Act
The ''Conservation Authorities Act'' (french: Loi sur les offices de protection de la nature) was created by the Ontario Provincial Legislature in 1946 to ensure the conservation, restoration and responsible management of hydrological features through programs that balance human, environmental and economic needs. The Act authorizes the formation of Conservation Authorities on a per watershed basis. History In 1941, conservationists from across the province met in Guelph to address the extensive damage to southern Ontario's environment. Great tracts of land had been ruined through clearing watersheds for farming, over-cutting of the forest and through faulty farming practices. The conference, under the leadership of J.D. Thomas, chose the Ganaraska watershed, one of the most damaged in the province, as its pilot project. Ganaraska River
The Ganaraska River is a river in Northumberland County and the Regional Municipality of Durham in Southern Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Great Lakes Basin, and is a tributary of Lake Ontario, which it reaches at the central community of the municipality of Port Hope. The river's name is thought to be derived from '' Ganaraske'', the Cayuga name for the village this Iroquoian nation had established in this area in 1779. Together with other nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, they had migrated from New York, forced to cede their homelands because of having allied with the British in the American Revolutionary War. The Crown provided additional lands to the Iroquois peoples, including what is now called the Six Nations of the Grand River reserve. Later the Crown granted land here to United Empire Loyalists, in compensation for their losses in the Northeast colonies, especially New York. There are several kinds of protected areas, which vary by level of protection depending on the enabling laws of each country or the regulations of the international organizations involved.
