Gamma (agency)
Gamma is a French photo agency, founded in 1966 by Raymond Depardon, Hubert Henrotte, Hugues Vassal and Léonard de Raemy. Gilles Caron joined the agency shortly after its foundation. Gamma became a prestigious photojournalism agency: photographers who have worked at Gamma include William Karel, Georges Merillon, Chas Gerretsen, Catherine Leroy, Françoise Demulder, Emanuele Scorcelletti, Michel Laurent (photojournalist), and Marie-Laure de Decker. In 1999, the agency was bought by Hachette Filipacchi photo group (GHFP), a division of Hachette Filipacchi Médias. Their name changed to the Eyedea group in March 2007, amidst reports that the agency was in financial distress. It was sold again in 2007 to Green Recovery, an investment fund that buys distressed companies. Raymond Depardon
Raymond Depardon (; born 6 July 1942) is a French photographer, photojournalist and documentary filmmaker. Early life Depardon was born in Villefranche-sur-Saône, France. Photographer Depardon is a mainly self-taught photographer, as he began taking pictures on his family's farm when he was 12. He apprenticed with a photographer-optician in Villefranche-sur-Saône before he moved to Paris in 1958. He began his career as a photojournalist in the early 1960s. He travelled to conflict zones including Algerian War, Algeria, Vietnam War, Vietnam, Biafra and Chad. In 1966, Depardon co-founded the photojournalism agency Gamma (agency), Gamma. In 1973 he became Gamma's director. From 1975 to 1977, Depardon traveled in Chad. The following year, he left Gamma to become a Magnum Photos associate, then a full member in 1979. Stock photography is the supply of photographs that are often licensed for specific uses. The stock photo industry, which began to gain hold in the 1920s, has established models including traditional macrostock photography, midstock photography, and microstock photography. Conventional stock agencies charge from several hundred to several thousand US dollars per image, while microstock photography may sell for around US$0.25. Professional stock photographers traditionally place their images with one or more stock agencies on a contractual basis, while stock agencies may accept the high-quality photos of amateur photographers through online submission. VII Photo Agency is an international photo agency wholly owned and governed by its membership. History The photographer owned agency was originally conceived by Gary Knight (photographer), Gary Knight and John Stanmeyer. Sygma was established in 1973, was acquired by Branded Entertainment Network, Corbis in 1999, and went bankrupt in 2011.
