Friendly Grocer (formerly known as Four Square) is a small supermarket chain operating in Australia. The chain was founded in New Zealand in 1923 and expanded to Australia in 1956. Since the success of Four Square the 'Friendly Grocer' brand was introduced in 2006. There are over 450 stores in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and the Australian Capital Territory. Its current slogan is "Just around the corner". Crestmead, Queensland
Crestmead is a suburb in the City of Logan, Queensland, Australia. In the , Crestmead had a population of 12,153 people. History In 1885, a number of Swedish immigrants from the ship ''Chyebassa'' established farms in the area. Early crops included oats, maize, potatoes and turnips. Horses and cattle were grazed and timber was cut. The Swedish settlement included O.Trulson, M.Trulson, M.Stjernqvist, M.Swensen, P.Swensen, N.Stjernqvist and P.Abrahamsen. Other early settlers were John and George Hubner who took up farms in 1893. Although the district acquired the unofficial name of Hubner from the Hubner family, when the (then) local government Shire of Beaudesert tried to formalise it in 1987, it was instead decided to name the area Crestmead after a local housing estate. Four Square is a chain of supermarkets in New Zealand that was founded by John Heaton Barker. It has 230 stores throughout New Zealand, mostly in small towns. Some Four Square supermarkets previously operated in Australia under the name Friendly Grocer. History Four Square emerged as a household name in the 1920s out of the Foodstuffs grocery buying co-operative, whose founder, John Heaton Barker, became concerned at the manner in which the activities of the grocery chain stores of the day were making life difficult for independent grocers in Auckland. Food For Less was an Australian discount supermarket chain owned by Woolworths Limited. It was originally established in Queensland, where a discount 'food barn' chain operating as "Jack the Slasher" was acquired by Safeway USA and when Woolworths took over Safeway in 1990. The stores were positioned as low-cost locations that sold dry groceries and frozen perishables. It later expanded into New South Wales and became the low-cost supermarket chain for Woolworths, competing with Franklins No Frills, Coles Myer's Bi-Lo and Aldi. The chain expanded when Woolworths purchased the Franklins stores in New South Wales and Queensland, and converted them to the Food For Less brand. In 2010 Woolworths began to shut down the brand. The stores were either converted into regular Woolworths stores or closed. By 2019 the shutdown was complete and no more Food For Less stores exist.
