French Ship Espérance (1781)
''Espérance'' was a ''Rhône''-class scow of the French Navy, launched in 1781 and later reclassified as a frigate. She earned fame as one of the ships of Bruni d'Entrecasteaux's expedition. The Australian town of Esperance and Esperance Bay in Western Australia were named after her. She was sold for breaking up in 1794. Career ''Espérance'' was built as ''Durance'' and served in de Grasse's squadron as a troopship. On 18 December 1782, she departed Toulon with the frigates ''Précieuse'' and ''Prosélyte'', and the corvette , in a convoy bound for the Caribbean, that also included the fluyts ''Gracieuse'' and ''Rhône''. A decade later, on 29 September 1791, ''Espérance'' under Captain Huon de Kermadec, and sailed from Brest to New Caledonia. They were on a mission under the command of Admiral d'Entrecasteaux in search of the explorer Lapérouse. The Roux family of Marseilles was a family of hydrographers and marine painters that specialized in ship portraits. While many generations were involved in the hydrographic business, it was really only three generations who painted and became known for their skill and accuracy in portraying a ship, making their work seem more like a photograph than a painting. The painters in the family were Joseph, Ange-Joseph Antoine Roux, Antoine, Mathieu-Antoine, Ursule-Josephine, François Joseph Frédéric and François Geoffroi. Commodore (rank), Commodore Jean François de Galaup, comte de Lapérouse (; 23 August 1741 – ) was a French Navy officer and explorer. Having enlisted in the Navy at the age of 15, he had a successful career and in 1785 was appointed to lead a scientific expedition around the world. His ships stopped in Chile, Hawaii, Alaska, California, Macau, the Philippines, Korea, Russia, Japan, Samoa, Tonga, and Australia before wrecking on the reefs of Vanikoro in the Solomon Islands. A corvette is a small warship. It is traditionally the smallest class of vessel considered to be a proper (or " rated") warship. A frigate () is a type of warship. In different eras, the roles and capabilities of ships classified as frigates have varied. The name frigate in the 17th to early 18th centuries was given to any full-rigged ship built for speed and maneuverability, intended to be used in scouting, escort and patrol roles.
