Una Noche Con Francis
"Una Noche con Francis", originally titled "Un Noche con Francis", is a calypso jazz composition written by Bud Powell in 1964 and dedicated to jazz fan and amateur musician Francis Paudras. History Like his earlier composition "Un Poco Loco," Powell's "Una Noche con Francis" is written to an Afro-Cuban rhythm, hence its Spanish-language title. The pianist was in the process of being released from Bouffemont Sanitorium at the time of its writing. First recorded by Powell's trio for the 1964 album ''Blues for Bouffemont/ The Invisible Cage'' shortly before his return to the United States, the tune was used for the soundtrack of Bertrand Tavernier's film '' 'Round Midnight.'' On the original recording for the album '' Relaxin' at Home, 61–64'', which preserved conservations that took place between the tunes, Powell titled the composition "Un Noche con Francis", but subsequent releases gave the piece its current, grammatically correct title. On the soundtrack album, arranged by ...

Award At Birdland

Moses. It was released by the Mythic Sound label in 1989. Critical reception Scott Yanow noted that "the recording quality is quite erratic" and described it as "not the strongest Bud Powell set available," but also commented that "this interesting release hints at what might have been and shows that Powell could still play well this late in his troubled life." ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz'' gave a higher rating and described Powell's performances at Birdland as "the last great sessions of his life." Track listing # Presentation of Shaeffer Award # " The Best Thing for You" (Irving Berlin) # "Like Someone in Love" (Jimmy Van Heusen, Johnny Burke) # "Off Minor" (Thelonious Monk) # " Star Eyes" (Gene de Paul, Don Raye) # "Back Home Again in Indiana" ( James F. Recordings from the hotel gig, which ran for several nights in August, were also used on the albums ''Hot House'', ''Salt Peanuts'', and on one release of ''The Invisible Cage, Blues for Bouffemont.'' Critical reception Critic Scott Yanow praised the album, noting Powell's "strong form" but taking points off the album's rating due to its poor audio quality. The authors of ''The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings'' wrote: "the music has a strangely evocative quality, more redolent of a time long gone and a man no longer living than many a professional recording."
