Earl Rudolph "Bud" Powell (September 27, 1924 – July 31, 1966) was an American jazz pianist and composer. A pioneer in the development of bebop and its associated contributions to jazz theory,Grove Powell's application of complex phrasing to the piano influenced both his contemporaries and later pianists including Walter Davis Jr., Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Barry Harris. Born in the midst of the Harlem Renaissance to a musical family, Powell, during the 1930s, developed an attacking, right-handed approach to the piano, which marked a break from the left-handed approach of stride and ragtime that had been prevalent. Upon joining trumpeter Cootie Williams's band in 1943, he received attention from the broader musical community for his fluency and advanced technique. ''Jazz Original'', also known as ''Bud Powell '57'', is a studio album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, released in 1955 by Norgran, featuring sessions that Powell recorded at Fine Sound Studios in New York in 1954 and 1955. The album was re-issued by Norgran as ''Bud Powell '57'' in 1957, re-issued again on LP by Verve and released on CD, also as ''Bud Powell '57'', by Verve in 2005 with the same track listing as the original LP. History If one excludes the three tribute albums '' Bud Plays Bird'', '' A Tribute to Cannonball'', and '' A Portrait of Thelonious'', there are no compositions by Powell on the album, only jazz standards. As the liner notes on the ''Bud Powell '57'' LP re-issue point out, standards from the 1920s in particular: "Someone to Watch Over Me" (1926), "Thou Swell" (1927), "Lover Come Back to Me" (1928), and "Deep Night" (1929). Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington (April 29, 1899 – May 24, 1974) was an American Jazz piano, jazz pianist, composer, and leader of his eponymous Big band, jazz orchestra from 1924 through the rest of his life. Born and raised in Washington, D.C., Ellington was based in New York City from the mid-1920s and gained a national profile through his orchestra's appearances at the Cotton Club in Harlem. Bouncing With Bud (album)
''Bouncing with Bud'', also known as ''In Copenhagen'' in later releases, is a 1962 album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, recorded in Copenhagen for Sonet Records, Delmark, and Storyville with Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen on bass and William Schiopffe on drums. It was re-released by Mobile Fidelity with improved audio quality on CD. History Ørsted Pedersen was only 16 years old at the time of the recording session. The album is unusual for its preference for up-tempo tunes, as Powell did not want to play a slow blues on the session as was typical on his later albums. Reception In a review for AllMusic, Scott Yanow called the album "an excellent set," with eight tracks that "showcase Bud Powell during his European renaissance period, giving pianists a definitive lesson in playing bop." Storyville Records is an international record company and label based in Copenhagen, Denmark, specializing in jazz and blues music. Besides its original material, Storyville Records has reissued many vintage jazz recordings that previously appeared on labels such as Paramount Records, American Music Records, and Southland Records. Many Storyville records were pressed in Japan. History Storyville Records was founded in the 1950s by Karl Emil Knudsen, a Danish jazz record collector who was working for the Copenhagen telephone company. Named after Storyville, New Orleans, the red-light district, its focus has always been on jazz and blues. The label's first releases were 78 rpm reissues featuring Ma Rainey, Clarence Williams Blue Five, and James P. Johnson. Sonet Records
Sonet Records was a jazz, pop and rock record label operating as an imprint of Universal Music Sweden. It was founded in Sweden in 1956. Sonet Records was established by Sven Lindholm and Gunnar Bergström, who managed the label into the 1980s. Dag Haeggqvist, the owner of Gazell Records, became an executive of the label in 1960, and Sonet eventually acquired Gazell's catalogue. It was distributed by Pickwick Records in North America in the 1960s, where it was involved in releasing some of Bill Haley's latter-day material. The label set up offices throughout Europe, including the United Kingdom. It also expanded into film, video, and other visual arts in addition to music. ''Strictly Powell'' is a studio album by jazz pianist Bud Powell, released in 1957 by RCA Victor, featuring a session Powell recorded in 1956. The album was remastered and released on CD by BMG Japan in 1994, and re-issued by RCA in 1995. The session is also available on '' The Complete RCA Trio Sessions''. History This is the first of Powell's two sessions for RCA Victor. ''Blues in the Closet'' is a studio album by the jazz pianist Bud Powell. Released in 1958 by Verve, it contains a session that Powell recorded at Fine Sound Studios in New York in September 1956. The album was released as a CD replica by Verve (Japan) in 2006 (POCJ-2744). The sessions (with alternate takes) are also available on ''The Complete Bud Powell on Verve'' (1994) CD box set. History This session is the last that Powell recorded for Verve, and re-unites him with Ray Brown for the first time (in the studio at least) since the first Verve sessions back in 1949-50. Fittingly, it ends with "52nd Street Theme", the traditional closing number in the heyday of bebop in the nineteen-forties.
