Francis Marion Drake
Francis Marion Drake (December 30, 1830 – November 20, 1903) was an American merchant, lawyer, banker and politician. He fought in the American Civil War and later became the List of Governors of Iowa, 16th Governor of Iowa. He is the namesake of Drake University. Early life Drake was born on December 30, 1830, in Rushville, Illinois, one of 14 children of John Adams Drake and Harriet Jane O'Neal. In 1836, his family moved to Fort Madison, Iowa until 1846. In 1846, they moved to Davis County, Iowa, Davis County, where John established the town of Drakesville, Iowa. He adventured to California, where he accidentally steered a steam ship into a reef in the Pacific Ocean, wrecking the steamer. In 1859, he opened a general store in Unionville, Iowa. The 36th Iowa Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Early days of the regiment The Thirty-sixth Iowa Infantry Regiment, US Volunteers, was one of several Midwestern volunteer regiments raised in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin in the late winter, spring and summer of 1862. Companies A and K consisted of men from Monroe County, while Companies B, C, D, E, F G, H and I were made up of men from Appanoose and Wapello Counties. The Pawnee, also known by their endonym (which translates to "Men of Men"), are an Plains Indians, Indigenous people of the Great Plains that historically lived in Nebraska and northern Kansas but today are based in Oklahoma. The California gold rush (1848–1855) began on January 24, 1848, when gold was found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The news of gold brought approximately 300,000 people to California from the rest of the United States and abroad.
