Helena is the eastern portion of Helena–West Helena, Arkansas, a city in Phillips County, Arkansas, located on the west bank of the Mississippi River. It was founded in 1833 by Nicholas Rightor and is named after the daughter of Sylvanus Phillips, an early settler of Phillips County and the namesake of Phillips County. As of the 2000 United States census, 2000 census, this portion of the city population was 6,323. Helena was the county seat of Phillips County"Phillips County, AR." Battle Of Helena
The Battle of Helena was fought on July 4, 1863, near Helena, Arkansas, during the American Civil War. Union (American Civil War), Union troops captured the city in July 1862, and had been using it as a base of operations. Over 7,500 Confederate States of America, Confederate troops led by Lieutenant General (CSA), Lieutenant General Theophilus Holmes attempted to capture Helena in hopes of relieving some of the pressure on the Confederate army Siege of Vicksburg, besieged in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Helena was defended by about 4,100 Union troops led by Major General (United States), Major General Benjamin Prentiss, manning one fort and Helena batteries, four batteries of artillery. Differing interpretations of Holmes' order to attack at daylight resulted in Brigadier General (CSA), Brigadier General James F. Vicksburg, Mississippi
Vicksburg is a historic city in Warren County, Mississippi, United States. It is the county seat. The population was 21,573 at the 2020 census. Located on a high bluff on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from Louisiana, Vicksburg was built by French colonists in 1719. The outpost withstood an attack from the native Natchez people. It was incorporated as Vicksburg in 1825 after Methodist missionary Newitt Vick. Lieutenant-General Theophilus Hunter Holmes (November 13, 1804 – June 21, 1880) was an American soldier who served as a senior officer of the Confederate States Army and commanded infantry in the Eastern and Trans-Mississippi theaters of the American Civil War. He had previously served with distinction as an officer of the United States Army in the Seminole and Mexican–American wars. The Missouri and North Arkansas was a railroad in Missouri and Arkansas from 1906 to 1935, with its successor lasting until 1946. History The railroad began as the Eureka Springs Railway in 1883 as a line from the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway ("Frisco") in Seligman, MO, reaching the resort town of Eureka Springs, AR in 1883. In May of 1899, the line was conveyed to a newly-formed company, the St. Louis and North Arkansas Railroad, which intended to build all the way to Little Rock.
